Role Title: Senior Engineer – Verification & Validation Delivery (Electrical)
We are Rolls‑Royce SMR, a company pioneering small modular reactors (SMR) to deliver clean, low‑carbon energy.
This role is part of the Development Engineering organisation, responsible for proving that the SMR power station design meets its objectives and requirements through verification, testing, demonstration and research programmes.
Overview
The Senior Verification & Validation (V&V) Engineer leads the V&V process for the SMR power station, ensuring that the design is safe, reliable and meets regulatory and customer expectations.
You will work closely with design leads, technical specialists and suppliers to develop and execute verification strategies, review evidence and confirm compliance throughout the lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Develop verification and validation strategies within your area of responsibility, defining activities and evidence required to demonstrate compliance.
- Act as an intelligent customer in the V&V of the plant and across the Roll‑s‑Royce SMR business.
- Support the verification and validation of the safety case and produce reports for regulatory bodies.
- Define objectives and requirements for verification activities (e. g., rig tests, analyses) and agree these with delivery teams.
- Review and collect evidence of verification activities across internal teams and the supply chain.
- Collate evidence and use it to assess compliance against requirements.
- Manage technical interfaces across functions to ensure coherent and efficient technical solutions.
- Coach and review the work of others to elevate technical quality across the team.
- Perform detailed technical checks and provide constructive feedback to peers.
- Ensure compliance with relevant nuclear and safety‑critical standards (e. g., IEC 61508, IEC 61513, IEC 61226).
Qualifications
- Degree in an engineering discipline recognised by a professional body, or working toward this.
- Experience in verification and validation of new products, ideally in a safety‑critical and highly regulated industry.
- Experience leading complex engineering projects; nuclear experience is preferred but not essential.
- Experience identifying, managing and escalating technical and programme risks.
- Strong supplier and customer relationship management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to unite multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach.
- Systems‑thinking mindset with experience collaborating across engineering disciplines.
Experience/Background
- Electrical power systems and high‑voltage networks; further experience in controls & instrumentation is desirable.
- Equipment Qualification (EQ) on a previous nuclear project, or qualification of components in a safety‑critical environment.
- Nuclear or other highly regulated industrial experience is desirable.
- Location & Working Arrangements
Hybrid working with primary sites in Derby, Manchester or Warrington. Remote support is also required.
- Salary & Package
- Salary band: £50,650 – £66,500, depending on skills, values and knowledge.
- Bonus: Performance‑related target opportunity (12.5%).
- Benefits allowance: £2,200 per annum.
- Pension: 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
- Holidays: 28 days + public holidays, with ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.

- Life assurance: 6 × pensionable pay.
- Home office support: £250 one‑off payment for new starters.
