About the Role
We need you to help shape the future of clean energy by supporting the radiological protection aspects of the Rolls‑Royce SMR power station. As an Advisor in Radiological Protection, you’ll work across our engineering and safety teams to ensure radiation hazards are understood, controlled, and demonstrated to be ALARP within our integrated Environment, Safety, Security & Safeguards (E3S) Case. This is a cross‑functional role where you’ll influence design decisions, contribute to licensing submissions, and drive best practice in radiological protection across our programme.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll make an impact by:
- Supporting the evaluation of radiological protection requirements across the SMR design, ensuring compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR17) and wider nuclear safety guidance.
- Providing expert advice to engineering teams to justify and demonstrate ALARP for radiation hazards.
- Contributing to the development and execution of radiological protection programmes for the E3S Case.
- Engaging with regulators and licensing authorities during SMR licensing activities.
- Identifying operating experience and best practice from the nuclear industry and integrating it into design.
- Supporting examination of innovative techniques that strengthen radiological safety.
What Success Looks Like

- Strong understanding of IRR17, safety case development, ACOP and related nuclear safety expectations.

What You’ll Bring
We’d love to hear from you if you meet at least 75% of the following:
- Essential Degree at NQF Level 6 in a scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
- Membership of a relevant professional institute.
- Good understanding of IRR17, the safety case process, and nuclear safety good practice.
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and documentation skills.
- Ability to plan and deliver work to deadline with a high standard of accuracy.
Beneficial Experience with operational nuclear power plant environments (normal operations or EMIT).
Awareness of wider regulatory frameworks (e.g., REPPIR).
Exposure to regulatory meetings, training delivery or similar.
