Rolls‑Royce SMR is seeking an experienced engineering lead to design and deliver Battery and UPS systems for a Small Modular Reactor nuclear power plant. The role encompasses full lifecycle design, compliance with international standards, verification, and leadership of technical and procurement activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with process and mechanical engineers to translate high‑level requirements into Battery and UPS system specifications.
- Liaise across engineering disciplines to integrate functional performance and systems effectively.
- Provide electrical technical leadership for Battery/UPS systems in support of the team manager.
- Assess and confirm that designs and specifications meet all applicable requirements.
- Ensure compliance with key industry standards including IEC63046, IEC61225 and SSG‑34.
- Produce verification and validation plans; define test plans to demonstrate system requirement satisfaction.
- Support the planning and implementation of lifecycle policies and procedures for battery and UPS systems.
- Ensure optimal solutions for procurement, operation and maintenance of battery and UPS equipment.
- Contribute to safety case development and engage with regulators and nuclear safety assessors.
- Act as a responsible designer or intelligent customer as required.
- Deliver agreed programme work and manage suppliers or contract partners where needed.
- Coach, mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
Essential Qualifications
- Experience across the lifecycle of battery or UPS systems in a highly regulated industry; nuclear experience desirable but not essential.
- Deep knowledge and significant experience in battery and UPS system design, specification, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance.
- Expertise in one or more relevant sub‑disciplines: battery systems, UPS systems, protection systems, earthing systems and electrical distribution systems.
- Good understanding of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (redundancy, diversity, etc.).
- Knowledge and experience in applying relevant standards such as IEC63046 and IEC61225, and understanding of regulatory frameworks.
- Experience applying systems engineering methodologies, including MBSE, to electrical systems.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to interpret and present complex technical information clearly to regulators.
- Ability to act as an intelligent customer and provide technical oversight of supply‑chain partners.
- Degree‑qualified in electrical engineering, electronics or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: £63,600–£83,500 depending on skills and experience.
- Performance‑related bonus target of 12.5%.

- Pension: 12% employer contribution and 6% employee contribution.
- Holiday entitlement: 28 days plus public holidays, with option to buy or sell up to 4 days.
