Role: Senior Engineer – Civil & Structural

Location: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as primary: Derby, Warrington or Manchester

Our Mission

Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy challenge. We are in pole position to become a world leader in SMRs and the UK’s premier green export technology.

The Team

The Civil & Structural team plays a central role in the development of the RR SMR design, supporting the analysis, design, substantiation, and integration of structures across the plant. This includes safety-classified structures within the Reactor Island as well as wider generic design scope such as infrastructure, conventional and balance-of-plant structures, and interfaces with site-wide civil works. Working across complex, highly regulated engineering challenges, the team applies advanced design and analytical methods to ensure structural integrity, constructability, safety, and compliance at every stage of the programme.

The Role

In this context, we are looking for a Senior Engineer – Civil & Structural to report to a Civil & Structural Team Leader. Leading defined engineering packages and supporting junior engineers, you will play a key role in delivering the analysis, design, and technical justification of reinforced concrete, steel, and integrated civil works across the Reactor Island and wider site. The role includes contributing to generic design development as well as supporting infrastructure, enabling works, and site-specific adaptation activities for a nationally significant programme.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, contributing to a nationally significant infrastructure programme at a pivotal stage of design and development, with exposure to both generic plant design and the wider civil works needed to support deployment on future sites.

What We’ll Need You to Do

We’ll need you to:

  • Leading the delivery of civil and structural engineering packages, ensuring outputs are delivered to programme, quality, and regulatory expectations across building, infrastructure, and wider site development scope

  • Developing and overseeing civil and structural analysis and design activities, demonstrating the adequacy and robustness of technical solutions for structures, foundations, infrastructure, and interfacing site works

  • Producing and reviewing design documentation and safety justifications, ensuring clear traceability between requirements, assumptions, and outputs

  • Applying governance, quality assurance, and design control processes across all activities, ensuring compliance with internal and external standards

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to integrate civil and structural designs with interfacing systems, structures, components, infrastructure, and site-wide development requirements

  • Supporting the resolution of complex technical challenges, providing engineering judgement and guidance across generic design, infrastructure integration, constructability, and site-specific adaptation within your area of responsibility

  • Providing direction, oversight, and mentoring to junior engineers contributing to package delivery

What You’ll Bring

As you can see, this is a key delivery role within our engineering function, requiring a motivated and detail-oriented individual who can contribute effectively within a structured, safety-focused environment. You will bring a collaborative approach, a strong foundation in civil and structural engineering principles, and the ability to develop your technical capability while delivering to programme expectations across plant structures, infrastructure, and site-related works, alongside:

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, with Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent demonstrable experience)

  • We’ll ask you about your experience leading civil and structural engineering packages and delivering complex engineering solutions within infrastructure or highly regulated, safety-critical environments, including interface management, site-specific development, and coordination of wider project scope

  • Strong technical knowledge of structural analysis, design, and relevant codes and standards, including reinforced concrete and/or steel structures

  • Experience working with complex and extreme loading conditions, such as seismic, thermal, pressure, blast, or impact scenarios

  • Understanding of design substantiation and the development of safety justifications; awareness of nuclear safety cases and systems engineering approaches is advantageous

  • Experience engaging with multidisciplinary stakeholders and supporting technical governance, including contribution to design reviews, integration of infrastructure and site-specific requirements, and response to technical challenge

Membership of relevant professional institutions and experience with tools or methodologies such as systems engineering or requirements management (e.g. DOORS) would be beneficial.

Location

This role offers flexible and hybrid working arrangements. You will be expected to attend a UK office location as required to support collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and programme delivery.

What’s in It for You

  • We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000-£63,000

  • Bonus - Performance related target opportunity 7%

  • Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package

  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.

  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.

  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care

  • Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay

  • £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases

Joining RR SMR means being part of a rapidly growing, purpose-driven organisation at a pivotal stage of development, with opportunities to shape your career, develop technically, and contribute to a landmark UK infrastructure programme.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of staged interviews. Due to the nature of the role, candidates will be required to successfully complete:

  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

  • Basic financial probity checks
