At Rolls‑Royce SMR, we’re developing a new generation of small modular nuclear reactors to support the UK’s net‑zero ambitions. Our work combines engineering excellence with a strong commitment to environmental protection, safety and regulatory integrity. You’ll join a collaborative, values‑led organisation where people are supported to do meaningful work that genuinely matters.
The Opportunity
We need you to join our Environment team as a Senior Advisor – Environment (Conventional), supporting the development of the integrated Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) case for Rolls‑Royce SMR. You’ll play a key role in shaping how conventional environmental aspects are identified, assessed and embedded within both generic design and site‑specific activities. Working closely with engineers and a wide range of stakeholders, you’ll help ensure our design represents Best Available Techniques (BAT) and meets regulatory expectations.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support delivery of the Environment Case and associated technical documentation as part of the wider E3S submission.
- Produce conventional environmental topic reports, including areas such as water abstraction, combustion activities, COMAH and waste management.
- Develop and review assessments relating to conventional waste discharges (solid, liquid and gaseous), disposals and statutory nuisance.
- Contribute to optioneering, HAZOP and design decision forums to ensure environmental considerations are embedded early.
- Work closely with engineering teams to understand design proposals and ensure environmental risks and impacts are fully considered.
- Act as an environmental subject matter expert, representing the project at internal reviews and external meetings with regulators and stakeholders.
- Respond to technical queries and requests for information from internal teams and external bodies.
Experience supporting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for planning and permitting applications would be beneficial.
What You’ll Bring
There’s no such thing as the perfect candidate. If you feel you meet around 75% of what we’re looking for, we’d really like to hear from you. We’re looking for:
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline.
- Chartered status, or working towards it, with a relevant professional body.
- Experience working within the UK environmental regulatory framework, ideally within a highly regulated or industrial environment.
- A demonstrable track record of supporting projects subject to environmental permitting requirements.
- Working knowledge of regulations such as EIA, COMAH, F‑gas and ozone‑depleting substances (beneficial, not essential).
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated technical solutions.
- Strong communication skills, with confidence engaging internal and external stakeholders.
Ways of Working
This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with regular collaboration expected near Manchester, Warrington or Derby. We support flexible working arrangements and are open to full‑time or part‑time patterns where business needs allow.

- Competitive salary between £50,650 - £66,500
- 12.5% bonus opportunity
- £2,200 flexible benefits allowance
- 28 days annual leave plus public holidays
- Standard Rolls‑Royce SMR pension, 12% Employer Match
- 37.5‑hour working week with flexibility
- Access to learning, development and professional support
