We are Rolls‑Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once‑in‑a‑career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

The Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) function is responsible for delivering the integrated electrical systems that underpin the safe, reliable and compliant operation of the SMR power station. Systems Engineering and Safety play a critical role in ensuring these systems meet functional, performance and nuclear safety requirements across the full lifecycle.

About the Role:

As the Manager – Electrical Systems and Safety, you will provide technical leadership across systems engineering and nuclear safety substantiation for Electrical Systems within the SMR programme. You will lead a team responsible for requirements definition, model‑based systems engineering (MBSE), and verification and validation activities, ensuring full traceability and alignment between system requirements, design solutions and supporting evidence. You will also own and develop the Electrical Systems Safety Case, applying a robust claims–arguments–evidence approach to demonstrate compliance with nuclear safety requirements. Working closely with design, analysis, safety case and regulatory teams, you will ensure that electrical systems are fully integrated, compliant and supported by high‑quality substantiation throughout the design lifecycle.

We’ll Need You To:

  • Lead delivery of systems engineering and safety scope for Electrical Systems
  • Define and manage requirements, interfaces and system architectures
  • Develop and maintain MBSE models and ensure traceability of requirements
  • Own and develop the Electrical Systems Safety Case (claims, arguments, evidence)
  • Ensure alignment with overarching plant safety case and regulatory expectations
  • Work with Verification teams to define and implement V&V strategies
  • Ensure systems meet functional, performance and nuclear safety requirements
  • Produce and review technical documentation, reports and substantiation outputs
  • Engage with regulators, independent nuclear safety teams and external stakeholders
  • Manage suppliers and act as an intelligent customer where required
  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, setting objectives and supporting capability growth
  • Identify and manage risks, issues, assumptions and dependencies across your scope
  • Shape and improve systems engineering processes, tools and methodologies

Key Skills Required:

We know there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you meet around 75% of the criteria below, we’d love to hear from you:

  • Strong experience in systems engineering within complex or highly regulated environments
  • Experience defining and managing requirements, interfaces and system architectures
  • Knowledge of Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches and tools
  • Experience developing or contributing to safety cases (claims–arguments–evidence structures)
  • Understanding of nuclear safety principles, standards and regulatory expectations (e.g. ALARP, IEC standards)
  • Experience across the engineering lifecycle, including verification and validation
  • Proven ability to lead teams and deliver technical work packages
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical outputs from engineers and suppliers
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience in industries such as Nuclear, Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Automotive or Oil & Gas

Qualifications:

  • Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards) desirable
  • Training or experience in systems engineering and/or nuclear safety case methodologies beneficial
