Role: Engineer – Civil & Structural
Location: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as primary: Derby, Warrington or Manchester
Our Mission
Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy challenge. We are in pole position to become a world leader in SMRs and the UK’s premier green export technology.
The Team
The Civil & Structural team plays a central role in the development of the RR SMR design, supporting the analysis, design, substantiation, and integration of structures across the plant. This includes safety-classified structures within the Reactor Island as well as wider generic design scope such as infrastructure, conventional and balance-of-plant structures, and interfaces with site-wide civil works. Working across complex, highly regulated engineering challenges, the team applies advanced design and analytical methods to ensure structural integrity, constructability, safety, and compliance at every stage of the programme.
The Role
In this context, we are looking for an Engineer – Civil & Structural to report to a Civil & Structural Team Leader. Supporting Senior Engineers and Analysts, you will contribute to the delivery of defined engineering packages across the analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures, helping to develop robust design solutions and support the safety case, generic design development, and site-specific adaptation of plant structures and associated infrastructure.
This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, contributing to a nationally significant infrastructure programme at a pivotal stage of design and development, with exposure to both generic plant design and the wider civil works needed to support deployment on future sites.
What We’ll Need You to Do
We’ll need you to:
Supporting the delivery of civil and structural engineering packages, contributing to the analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures across the Reactor Island, wider plant areas, and associated infrastructure within defined scopes of work
Assisting in the development, checking, and interpretation of structural analysis (including finite element modelling where applicable) to support design decisions, technical justification, and the maturation of generic design solutions
Contributing to the preparation of design documentation and safety case inputs, ensuring outputs are clear, traceable, and aligned with programme, licensing, and site deployment requirements
Applying established governance, design control, and quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with internal standards, relevant codes, and regulatory expectations
Working closely with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate interfaces with systems, components, architecture, layout, geotechnics, construction, and other engineering disciplines across the plant and site
Supporting the development of solutions for site-specific works, including foundations, external structures, below-ground works, and wider infrastructure interfaces as project needs evolve
Supporting the resolution of technical issues, escalating where appropriate, and contributing to continuous improvement in engineering delivery across both design development and deployment planning
Demonstrating a proactive approach to personal development, building capability in analysis, design, constructability, and nuclear safety principles
What You’ll Bring
As you can see, this is a key delivery role within our engineering function, requiring a motivated and detail-oriented individual who can contribute effectively within a structured, safety-focused environment. You will bring a collaborative approach, a strong foundation in civil and structural engineering principles, and the ability to develop your technical capability while delivering to programme expectations across plant structures, infrastructure, and site-related works, alongside:
Experience & Qualifications
A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent qualification), with a clear pathway toward professional accreditation (e.g. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer)
We’ll ask you about your experience contributing to civil and structural engineering projects, including analysis and design activities within infrastructure, industrial, energy, or other regulated and safety-critical environments
Demonstrable understanding of structural behaviour, analysis techniques, and relevant design codes and standards, with the ability to apply these under appropriate supervision
Experience working with reinforced concrete and/or steel structures; exposure to complex loading conditions such as seismic, thermal, pressure, accidental, or extreme environmental events is advantageous
Awareness of how civil and structural design interfaces with site-specific considerations such as ground conditions, constructability, access, utilities, drainage, and external works would be beneficial
Ability to work within established engineering processes, demonstrating sound judgement appropriate to your level of experience and seeking guidance where required
Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to technical discussions across a broad project scope
Location
This role offers flexible and hybrid working arrangements. You will be expected to attend a UK office location as required to support collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and programme delivery.
What’s in It for You
We anticipate paying a salary of between £42,000 - £52,500 DOE plus:-
