An exciting opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineer role in the Welding Team has arisen within Rolls Royce Submarines.
Our submarines business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems in support of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.
The Welding Engineer will be primarily responsible for pursuing the development and implementation of various welding techniques, spanning across manual, automated and mechanised processes to meet all product and business requirements across the manufacture of Primary Circuit and Core components. They will influence the design and manufacture of key components that sit within the heart of the Submarines Pressurised Water Reactor system, ensuring the selection of appropriate welding techniques, processes and procedures.
With quality, simplification and delivery at the forefront of their minds, they will drive continuous improvement projects from initial concepts to final completion and implementation. From process improvements to factory performance and flow, they will play a key role in ensuring an uninterrupted manufacturing plant. Liaising with the wider Manufacturing and Engineering teams to provide expertise and knowledge is vital within this role.

You will support a mixture of emergent shop floor issues, from product non-conformance, root cause investigations and cell performance, to supporting welders and managing Welder Qualifications in line with industry and internal standards. Additionally, this person will be expected to support manufacturing meetings and reviews with the goal of ensuring SQCDP metrics are on target and in line with business requirements.
What you will be doing:
You will be responsible for the design, development, justification, and application of high integrity welding techniques, successful implementation of new welding procedures and technologies. They will achieve this through effective integration with Engineering, Manufacturing, suppliers and the wider Submarines enterprise.

- Competent in identifying, developing, qualifying and justifying welding techniques in accordance with the relevant design code, ideally within a relevant industry.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience of working to the requirements of boiler and pressure vessel design and manufacturing standards.
- Demonstrates that product and process safety is of paramount importance assuring products meet all regulatory, code, design and manufacturing and Quality Assurance requirements and complying with all applicable legislation and codes of professional conduct.
- Proven ability to define, plan, monitor and control projects, programmes and work packages, ensuring the work is delivered to cost, quality and schedule.
- Ability to integrate well within a large organisation that operates in a high-pressure environment. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are desirable.
The below qualifications are desirable but not essential:
- Professional welding qualifications (e.g. International Institute of Welding (IIW) / European Welding Federation (EWF) Welding Engineer or Technologist status, IEng or CEng status, MSc Welding Engineering)
- Professionally Qualified Engineer (e.g. UK minimum HND/foundation degree or other national equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
