The Job Opportunity: Roke is seeking a Software Engineer to join a team working on software for products in the RF communication and sensors domain. You will be responsible for the detailed design, implementation and testing of components of the product software, working with the agile team Product Owner and System Design Authority.
The role requires individuals who can work closely with an agile software team, applying their technical knowledge and domain experience, whilst communicating effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. There is a degree of flexibility as to the agile tasking within the agile software team, depending on your expertise; the role can flex to focus either on Modern UI design and implementation or Embedded software development.
For the right candidate with team leadership or line management experience, the role could also entail a line management component. This aspect would involve responsibility for the day-to-day support and guidance of the team, reporting on performance and helping with resourcing. Individuals must be able to work effectively in a highly technically challenging but rewarding environment, able to quickly assess trade-offs and lead on technical decision making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Detailed design of components of the product software
- Implementation and testing of software as part of an agile software team
- Gaining understanding of existing Roke EW system products and future development agendas.
Essential skills will include:
- BEng/BSc and/or master’s degree in an appropriate engineering, computer science, information systems or related subject.
- Knowledge of Sensor and Communication systems.
- Software engineering experience from R&D concept through to the full product development lifecycle
- Modern software architecture practices
- Experience of some kind of scientific application/DSP, including algorithm implementation
- Capability in multiple languages and switching between languages rapidly, e.g. C++/C#/Python
- Comfortable with modern agile development practices e.g. Scrum/Kanban
- Comfortable with modern software tooling e.g. Gitlab, Git, VS Code
Ideally you will have experience in some of the following:
- Experience of modern UI design.
- Embedded software development (cross-compiling, deployment).
- Linux OS and tools, kernel drivers
- DevOps (Gitlab CI/CD scripting, pipelines, Docker)
- Team Leadership or Line Management experience
