The Opportunity
Roke is recruiting for a Data Solution Engineer who is driven by solving varied and interesting client problems and supporting our product development. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the high‑level design and implementation of data‑intensive solutions, and may also support Client Managers directly in a pre‑sales capacity to develop relationships and solutions that can support future business growth. For this specific role, we are seeking someone with strong experience in data solutions, who can design and deliver data pipelines and data platforms for both structured and unstructured data applications. The ideal candidate will have a passion for supporting the development of capability through development of new and novel solutions using COTS components. This position will be pivotal to capability development through identifying opportunities to develop our own IP in our target proposition space, as well as being able to work with our customers across the full life cycle mix of requirements capture, solution development, system integration and capability operation.
Areas of Responsibility / Tasks
- Support Defence customers develop their data solutions in line with their strategy.
- Build relevant architectural views of data software and analytics solutions, either as standalone engagements or within a larger multi‑disciplinary programme environment.
- Communicate the data solutions to non‑technical stakeholders and technical experts.
- Work within a multi‑disciplinary development team and lead on the data solutions, driving technology choices, and delivering early‑stage investigations through to large‑scale implementations.
- Represent Roke and its technical solutions and capabilities toward client communities.

Essential skills / experience
- Degree level qualification in a STEM subject or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience of designing, implementing and integrating data solutions in a UK Defence or other public‑sector context.
- Experience of building data pipelines in a cloud environment (Azure, AWS, GCP).
- Direct experience with data ingestion, transformation and persistence technologies and good understanding of how they combine to build resilient data pipelines.
- Good understanding of structured and unstructured data, and the techniques needed to exploit them in different ways, including schemas, ontologies, taxonomies and translation/representation issues.
- Experience of using continuous integration and continuous deployment techniques, and the quality mechanisms that are required to support them.
- Experience of working within an agile framework.
- Knowledge of data schemas/exchange specifications in defence.
- Secure by design for data at rest and data in the network.
- Knowledge of data transport mechanisms in denied, degraded, intermittent and limited/low‑bandwidth (DDIL) environments; and of data solutions in general for compute and storage constrained environments.
- Knowledge of wider applications of data for AI/ML solutions.
- Scrum‑master and/or product owner experience.
- Knowledge of commercial and contractual frameworks.

Due to the nature of this role, we require you to be eligible to achieve a minimum of SC clearance but you can expect to be put forward for DV clearance to support working with higher classification UK Defence data solutions. As a result, you should have resided in the U.K. for the last 5 years for SC.
