About you If you are an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor who enjoys taking commercial responsibility for a busy division rather than simply managing individual projects, this could be a really good opportunity for you. You will be joining an established business at their Chadderton office in Greater Manchester, taking responsibility for the commercial management of a Fire and Security division with an annual turnover of approximately £40 million. This is a senior position where you will be overseeing an existing Quantity Surveyor and Trainee Quantity Surveyor, working closely with the operational team and making sure the division is performing commercially. The projects are predominantly for retail clients, covering CCTV installations, fire alarm systems, intruder alarms and other security installations. The business has also started securing work within the public sector. Individual projects typically range from £500,000 to £900,000, although the volume of work is particularly important. You will need to be comfortable managing the commercial performance of multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining an accurate understanding of how the wider division is performing. You do not need to have worked within Fire and Security previously. A background in M&E or general construction would be considered, providing you have the right commercial experience. The salary is £65,000 per annum, plus a £5,700 car allowance and a potential annual bonus of 10% of salary. Hybrid working is also available. Your experience You will need to be operating at Senior Quantity Surveyor level already, with experience taking commercial responsibility for multiple construction or M&E projects. This is not a position for someone making their first move into a senior role. You will be expected to provide guidance and oversight to the existing commercial team from the outset. You should be confident producing and reviewing project CVRs, understanding cost movements, forecasting profitability and identifying commercial risks before they become significant issues. Experience preparing or contributing to monthly divisional CVRs would be particularly useful, as you will be responsible for providing an accurate picture of the commercial performance of the Fire and Security division. You will also need a good understanding of procurement, subcontractor management, valuations, variations, cost reporting and final accounts. Experience supporting tender submissions will be important, particularly reviewing costs, identifying commercial risks and making sure tenders are priced appropriately. Given the volume of projects, you will need to be organised and capable of maintaining commercial control across a number of live jobs rather than concentrating on one or two larger schemes. You should also be comfortable managing and developing other Quantity Surveyors, reviewing their work and providing guidance when needed. Most importantly, you will need to be commercially confident, approachable and capable of working closely with operational colleagues to make sure the division continues to perform. What you will be doing with your experience You will take responsibility for overseeing the commercial performance of a £40 million Fire and Security division, working from the Chadderton office with hybrid working available. You will manage and support an existing Quantity Surveyor and Trainee Quantity Surveyor, helping them develop while making sure the commercial requirements of the division are being managed properly. The division delivers a high volume of projects, typically valued between £500,000 and £900,000, covering CCTV, fire alarms, intruder alarms and associated installations. Much of the work is within the retail sector, although the business is also developing its presence in the public sector. You will oversee project CVRs, review costs and forecasts and make sure the commercial position of each project is accurately reported. Alongside this, you will be responsible for supporting the preparation of monthly divisional CVRs, bringing together the financial performance of the projects to provide senior management with a clear understanding of profitability, risks and opportunities. You will work closely with the operational team to review project performance, identify potential issues and make sure appropriate action is taken where costs or margins are moving away from expectations. You will also support tender submissions, reviewing commercial information, assessing costs and helping ensure new work is secured on commercially sensible terms. There will be involvement in procurement, subcontractor management, valuations, variations and final accounts, although your main responsibility will be maintaining commercial oversight of the division rather than personally managing every aspect of every project. You will need to be comfortable balancing the detail of individual projects with the bigger picture, ensuring the division is commercially controlled and the team has the support it needs. About the business You will be joining an established business delivering engineering, installation and maintenance services to clients across the UK. The opportunity sits within their Fire and Security division, which operates as a standalone business unit with an annual turnover of approximately £40 million. The division delivers a significant volume of CCTV, fire alarm and security installation projects, predominantly for retail clients, with an increasing presence in the public sector. They already have a Quantity Surveyor and Trainee Quantity Surveyor in place and are looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function. This could be a particularly good opportunity if you are currently working as a Senior Quantity Surveyor within M&E or construction and would like to take responsibility for the commercial performance of an entire division. You will have the opportunity to lead an existing team, work closely with senior management and have a genuine influence on how the business manages its costs, reporting and profitability. The role is based in Chadderton, Greater Manchester, with hybrid working available. The package includes a salary of £65,000, a £5,700 annual car allowance and a potential annual bonus of up to £6,500, equivalent to 10% of basic salary. The business is ideally looking to make an offer before Christmas, with a view to someone joining at the beginning of January, although individual notice periods can be discussed.
