About you If you are working in construction Health and Safety and feel ready to take on more responsibility, this could be a really good opportunity for you. You will be joining a growing principal contractor as an Assistant Health and Safety Manager, working alongside an experienced Senior Health and Safety Manager who will help you develop your knowledge and confidence. This is a role where you will spend time out on construction sites, working with Site Managers and project teams to make sure health and safety standards are being followed properly. You will initially spend time learning the company's systems and processes before gradually taking more responsibility for managing health, safety, environmental and quality compliance across your own projects. Ideally, you will be based south of Cannock, as your projects will cover the Midlands, South East, South West and South Wales. The salary is £45,000 to £50,000 per annum, plus car or car allowance and benefits. Your experience You will ideally have around 3 to 5 years of experience within the construction industry, including a good grounding in a Health and Safety role. You should hold a NEBOSH National Construction Certificate or be working towards it. A Level 6 qualification in Occupational Health and Safety Practice would be beneficial, although it is not essential. You will need to understand construction site safety, risk assessments, inspections and the importance of making sure issues are properly addressed rather than simply recorded. Just as importantly, you need to be comfortable dealing with people. You will be working with Site Managers, operatives, clients and senior management, so you need to be able to communicate clearly and build good working relationships. You should be organised, comfortable working independently and genuinely interested in developing your career within construction Health and Safety. A full UK driving licence is essential, and you will need to be happy travelling regularly to projects across the Midlands and southern regions, including occasional overnight stays. What you will be doing with your experience You will work closely with the Senior Health and Safety Manager, initially learning the business's systems, standards and approach to managing safety across its construction projects. As you become more familiar with the business, you will take increasing responsibility for carrying out site inspections, completing health and safety audits and monitoring compliance across your allocated projects. You will identify hazards, raise any nonconformances and work with the relevant teams to make sure issues are resolved properly. You will also be involved in monitoring environmental and quality standards, helping to ensure projects meet the wider HSEQ requirements of the business. The company uses a compliance management system called FONN, which you will learn to use for recording issues, tracking actions and making sure everything is followed through. Another important part of the role will be supporting Site Managers with their understanding of company procedures and standards, eventually helping to deliver training to both new and existing members of the team. This is not a role where you will simply turn up on site with a checklist. You will be expected to build relationships, offer practical advice and help the teams understand how to work safely while keeping their projects moving. About the business You will be joining an established principal contractor that is continuing to grow across the UK construction market. The business delivers construction projects across different regions and is looking to strengthen its Health and Safety team as its workload increases. You will be supporting projects across the Midlands, South East, South West and South Wales, working closely with an experienced Senior Health and Safety Manager. One of the real attractions of this opportunity is the development available. They are not expecting you to arrive knowing everything. You will have the opportunity to learn their systems, build your experience and gradually take on more responsibility as your confidence grows. If you are currently working as a Health and Safety Advisor or Assistant Health and Safety Manager and want to progress your career with a growing principal contractor, this could be a good next move. The salary is £45,000 to £50,000 per annum, plus car or car allowance and benefits.
