We have an exciting opportunity for an apprentice dental nurse to join our friendly practice based in Slough. The role will involve providing chairside support and a high level of oral health care to patients. During the Dental Nurse Apprenticeship, you will receive ongoing support, development and training to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to qualify and have a successful career in dental nursing.
Responsibilities
- Assisting the dentist in providing safe and effective treatments to patients, from simple check-ups to advanced specialist treatments
- Providing patients with a high level of care
- Setting up and cleaning surgery
- Sterilising instruments
- Updating patient records
- Maintaining equipment
- Preparing instruments and materials for various treatments
- Adhering to practice policies and procedures
- Identifying relevant and appropriate dental, oral, craniofacial, and general anatomy
- Evaluating health risks of prescribed, non-prescribed and recreational drug use and misuse on oral and general health
- Evaluating the scientific principles underpinning the use of materials and biomaterials
- Identifying signs of abuse, neglect or emotional trauma
- Identifying signs of normal and abnormal facial growth and development milestones
- Assessing patients' levels of anxiety, experience, and expectations in respect of dental care and oral health
- Contributing to relevant investigations and diagnostic procedures
- Undertaking orthodontic assessment
- Obtaining valid consent from patients
- Recording accurate and contemporaneous patient history and dental charting
- Recording an oral health assessment and preparing records, images, equipment and materials for clinical assessment
- Processing and managing dental radiographs and images
- Managing patient anxiety appropriately, effectively, and safely
- Monitoring, supporting and reassuring patients through effective communication and behavioural techniques
- Identifying changes in the patient's oral health status and taking appropriate action
- Making arrangements for follow-up care as prescribed
- Providing chairside support to the operator during treatment
- Preparing, mixing and handling dental materials
- Identifying and explaining risks within the clinical environment
- Implementing, performing, and managing infection control procedures
- Preparing and maintaining the clinical environment including instruments and equipment
- Identifying, assessing, and managing medical emergencies
- Providing patients/carers with preventive advice and interventions to promote self-care and oral health
- Supporting the management of patients with acute oral conditions
- Adopting an evidence-based approach to clinical practice
- Communicating effectively with patients, the public and colleagues
- Maintaining complete and accurate patient records in line with legal requirements and best practice
- Demonstrating empathy, respect and professional communication in all interactions
- Demonstrating effective teamwork and contributing to providing dental care
- Working within the scope of practice, leading or delegating where appropriate
- Ensuring patient-centred care and maintaining safety and wellbeing of patients and the dental team
- Speaking up to protect others from harm and engaging in continuous improvement

Training and Qualifications
The apprenticeship provides employment and training within a dental practice to study the Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship covers knowledge, skills and behaviours including:

- Management of Oral Health Diseases and Dental Anatomy, Oral Health Assessments and Treatment Planning
GCSE or equivalent in English (grade 4) and Maths (grade 4) is required along with communication skills, attention to detail, organisation skills, customer care skills, patience and a genuine interest in working in the dental sector; willingness to undertake Hepatitis B vaccination and DBS clearance.
Additional Information
The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know. The working day includes learning the practical skills while the training provider delivers the theory with online study and regular 1-2-1 sessions. Off-the-job training is provided during paid working hours.
