We are looking for a commercially driven Presales Consultant to join our growing Managed Services business, supporting Mid-Market and Enterprise customers.

This is a customer-facing consultancy role where success is measured not simply by technical expertise, but by the ability to understand customers, uncover their business challenges and develop solutions that genuinely meet their needs.

We are looking for someone who can engage confidently with stakeholders at every level, build trusted relationships and create tailored service offerings rather than relying on standard solutions or vendor-led designs.

Working closely with Sales, Service Delivery and Professional Services, you will translate business requirements into commercially viable managed service solutions that are technically robust, operationally supportable and aligned with our long-term service strategy.

You will be equally comfortable discussing networking architecture with technical teams as you are explaining business outcomes and value to senior decision makers.

A strong networking and infrastructure background is essential, alongside a genuine desire to continue developing your expertise across cloud technologies, automation and AI-enabled infrastructure.

The Opportunity

This role offers the opportunity to influence both customers and our own service portfolio.

You'll become a trusted advisor throughout the sales process, taking ownership of technical discovery, understanding what customers are trying to achieve and designing solutions that solve business problems rather than simply responding to a specification.

We're looking for someone who enjoys getting under the skin of a customer's environment, can quickly identify opportunities for improvement and has the commercial awareness to recommend services that deliver long-term value for both the customer and the business.

The ability to read a customer, adapt your approach and communicate with credibility is just as important as technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead technical discovery workshops and customer engagements, developing a clear understanding of each organisation's objectives, operational challenges and future ambitions.

Rather than producing standard proposals, you'll create tailored managed service solutions that reflect each customer's unique environment and commercial priorities.

Working alongside Account Managers, you'll support the entire sales lifecycle, from initial customer meetings through to solution presentations, technical validation, commercial proposals and successful handover into delivery.

You'll ensure every solution is practical, supportable and designed with long-term managed services in mind.

The role also involves producing solution documentation including High-Level Designs, Low-Level Designs, Statements of Work and implementation scopes, while working closely with Service Delivery to ensure solutions can be effectively transitioned into ongoing support.

You'll maintain strong relationships with key technology vendors and remain up to date with emerging technologies, particularly across networking, cloud infrastructure, automation and AI, helping shape future service offerings for our customers.

  • Technical Experience
  • Enterprise networking including Routing & Switching, SD-WAN, Wireless, VPN, Internet Connectivity and Network Security.
  • Infrastructure technologies including VMware, Hyper-V, Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 and Hybrid Infrastructure.
  • Microsoft Azure and cloud platforms, with an interest in expanding knowledge across cloud-native services and AI technologies.
  • Working knowledge of AWS (core services, networking, IAM, migration/DR patterns) and the ability to compare/contrast against Azure for multi-cloud client conversations.
  • Cyber security technologies including Next Generation Firewalls, Zero Trust, Identity Management and Microsoft Security solutions (Defender, Entra, Purview).
  • Understanding of SOC/SIEM concepts — log ingestion, threat detection, alert triage, and how managed detection & response (MDR) services fit into a client's security posture.
  • Backup, resilience and disaster recovery design (e. g. Veeam), including recovery point/time objectives (RPO/RTO) and business continuity planning.
  • Endpoint and RMM tooling exposure (e. g. N-able, Inforcer) and how these integrate into a managed services delivery model.
  • Voice/UC and collaboration platforms (e. g. 3CX) as part of broader infrastructure modernisation projects.
  • Compliance and governance frameworks relevant to UK mid-market and public sector clients (e. g. Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, NHS DSPT) and how these shape solution design.
  • Experience designing solutions that are operationally supportable within a Managed Services environment — balancing technical best practice with what a support desk can realistically run.

Essential Experience

You'll ideally have

  • Five or more years' experience in Presales, Solutions Architecture or Senior Infrastructure Consultancy.
  • A strong networking and infrastructure background.
  • Experience working within an MSP, Systems Integrator, VAR or another IT Service Provider.
  • Experience supporting Mid-Market and Enterprise customers.
  • A consultative approach with excellent commercial awareness and the ability to translate customer requirements into compelling service solutions.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to engage everyone from technical engineers to CIOs and business leaders.
  • A passion for continuous learning and a desire to develop your expertise in cloud infrastructure, automation and AI.

How to prepare for a job interview at ROCK

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
