This is a working supervisor position reporting to the manager of the Sterile Processing Center (SPC). Responsibilities include planning, organizing and coordinating the day-to-day operations of SPC, the care, preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies. Serves as a key contact and resource for Operating Room questions and issues. Ensures adherence to The Joint Commission (TJC) and State Board of Health regulations. Supervises daily activities of assigned staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Organises and coordinates the day-to-day operations of SPC, care, preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies by:
- Ensuring operational compliance with legal, regulatory and institutional requirements by following the procedures and standards of quality for decontamination, preparation, sterilisation, storage and distribution of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Reviewing and evaluating, on an ongoing basis, the flow of work through the Main SPC and SPC-OR areas; also identifying areas where operational efficiencies need improvement.
- Ensuring that instruments and equipment are in good working order and facilitating the repair or replacement of instruments and equipment as appropriate.
- Assisting in maintaining adequate levels of instrumentation and facilitating the replacement of instrumentation as necessary.
- Assisting with maintaining an effective cost control and inventory control system, inventory supply levels and preparing requisitions for additional supplies and equipment.
- Assisting with recruiting, hiring, evaluating, coaching and, if necessary, disciplining assigned staff.
- Evaluating the quality and quantity of the work performed by the SPC Technicians; also providing input to the Manager for performance appraisals for assigned staff.
- Supporting the SPC staff with scheduling the workload of assigned staff. Also communicating with the Manager regarding any concerns or problems reported by the staff.
- Interpreting, enforcing and supporting Hospital and department policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Maintaining open communications with other Hospital departments which interface with Sterile Processing (i.e., Operating Room, Nursing Units, Administrative Clinical Leaders (ACL’s), etc.).
Maintains a safe environment for staff and patients by:
- Maintaining sterilisation testing records for Sterile Processing.
- Maintaining and distributing hazard communication information in the department as appropriate.
- Maintaining open communications with the Operating Room (O.R.) staff, Infection Control practitioners, Engineering and Environmental Services departments.
- Assisting in the development, implementation and evaluation of a Quality Assurance program; also involving team members in the same.
Maintains knowledge, skills and competence in areas of responsibility by:
- Attending in-services and department meetings; also participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.
- Reading current professional literature and journals.
- Maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate.
Contributes to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the department by:
- Coordinating with purchasing/Central stores regarding inventory supplies in backorder/ stock out situations.
- Coordinating with end-user departments to review product additions and deletions and assisting in the transition process of product conversion.
- Completing other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Performing the functions of a Sterile Processing Technician as needed.
Preferred Responsibilities
- Minimum one year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 15 months of experience as a sterile processing technician.
Required Licensure/Certification Skills
- CRCST certification (Certified Registered Central Service Technician).
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work. Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires constant walking, standing or squatting.
Pay Range
$25.00 - $30.00
