The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing direct patient care, usually under the direction of a Registered Nurse, in accordance with established plans. The Licensed Practical Nurse is a key member of the care delivery team. The Licensed Practical Nurse communicates the needs of the patient and the team; collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, takes direction from the RN and delegates appropriately to the other members of the team.
The Acute Medical Unit (5400/5500) specializes in the care of patients with complex medical conditions and multi-system health issues. Nurses on this unit have the opportunity to build and strengthen their clinical expertise by managing a wide range of acute illnesses, including cardiac conditions requiring telemetry, diabetes, kidney disease and dialysis, pulmonary disorders, and patients requiring multiple drips, drains, and catheters. In addition to medical care, RNs on 5400/5500 play a vital role in supporting the psychosocial needs of patients, providing compassionate, holistic care to a diverse patient population.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promote and restore patients' health by completing the nursing process; collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; perform various treatment procedures; provide physical, educational and emotional support to patients, friends and families; supervise assigned team members.
- Administer medication and give/receive relevant reports, both written and verbal from/to appropriate staff as per departmental protocols.
- Ensure concise, pertinent and complete documentation using computerized medical record process.
- Ensure clinical areas are properly supplied and exam rooms are available and stocked.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing or equivalent required.
- Current licensure in State of New York as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills highly desired.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

- BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (AHA)
