La position
At Roche, we believe that every patient deserves the best possible care, supported by innovative science and technology. We are looking for a senior individual contributor to take significant technical ownership of components within our One Diagnostics Platform.
In this role, you won't just build apps; you will design and develop the reusable Android components, frameworks, and libraries that power multiple medical diagnostics ecosystems. Your work will directly impact the reliability, security, and scale of software used globally in life-saving medical environments.
Your responsibilities
-
Design, develop and maintain shared Android applications, components, libraries and frameworks using Kotlin and Java.
-
Develop clear, stable and well-documented APIs according to the Roche quality processes and regulatory requirements.
-
Drive modular Android architecture and establish patterns that support scalability, maintainability and reuse.
-
Ensure backward compatibility and manage the lifecycle, versioning and migration of shared components.
-
Collaborate with project teams to understand common needs and translate them into reusable platform capabilities.
-
Review technical designs and code, identify architectural risks and promote consistent engineering practices.
-
Plan and perform software unit verification tests depending on the role as developer or development tester of a specific component from the One diagnostics Platform
-
Develop robust automated tests, including unit, integration and UI tests where appropriate.
-
Investigate complex technical issues affecting multiple applications and provide sustainable solutions rather than isolated fixes.
-
Contribute to secure software design, protection of sensitive data and appropriate handling of application permissions according to regulatory guidelines.
-
Create and maintain the technical documentation and development evidence required in a regulated medical environment.
-
Work closely with product owners, system architects, quality, regulatory, cybersecurity and verification teams.
-
Raise the Bar: Mentor other engineers through constructive code reviews, design discussions, and championing modern engineering practices.
Who You Are
You combine strong hands-on Android expertise with a systems-thinking mindset. You enjoy solving problems once and making the solution useful for many teams. You care about clear interfaces, maintainable code, reliable tests, and thorough documentation within a quality-driven, compliant environment.
Requirements
-
High proficiency in Kotlin and strong experience in Java.
-
Extensive background in building Android applications, shared software components, system-level architecture, and Gradle build systems.
-
Practical experience using AI-assisted tools within software development workflows.
-
Proven track record designing modular architectures, managing APIs, and using versioning/dependency tools within highly regulated or safety-critical sectors (e.g., Medical Devices/MedTech, Automotive, Aviation, Defense, Railway).
-
Strong grasp of the Android SDK, application lifecycles, memory management, clean architecture, and dependency injection.
-
Solid experience with unit and integration test automation and pipeline integration (Azure DevOps/GitHub).
-
Professional fluency in English (written and verbal).
-
You are capable of traveling 5% to 10% of your time to different locations mainly within Europe.
Beneficial Qualifications:
-
Familiarity with healthcare/MedTech software regulatory standards (IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 81001-5-1).
-
Experience with threat modeling, secure data handling, design controls, and regulatory submission documentation.
What we offer
-
The opportunity to build software that supports medical diagnostics and contributes to better healthcare.
-
Significant technical ownership without requiring a people-management career path.
-
Collaboration with experienced engineers and specialists across software, systems, quality, regulatory and cybersecurity.
-
The opportunity to shape reusable technologies used across multiple products.
-
A professional environment that values engineering quality, continuous learning and thoughtful technical decision-making.
