About the Role

We're looking for a Highway Clerk of Works to play a vital role in safeguarding the future of our highway infrastructure.

As the Council's on-site technical representative, you'll be at the forefront of ensuring new roads, footways, drainage systems and public spaces are built to the highest standards before they become part of the public highway network. Working closely with developers, contractors and stakeholders, you'll help protect public assets and ensure quality is never compromised.

This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll:

  • Inspect highway works associated with housing and development schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications and standards, including works delivered under Section 278, Section 38 and Section 50 agreements.
  • Help prevent the adoption of poor-quality highway infrastructure.
  • Oversee highway capital projects and maintenance works, ensuring exceptional standards of workmanship.
  • Provide technical advice and support to colleagues and management teams.
  • Build positive relationships with developers, contractors, residents and other key stakeholders.

We're looking for someone with strong technical knowledge of highway construction, excellent attention to detail, and the confidence to challenge poor workmanship when necessary. If you take pride in delivering high‑quality infrastructure and want to make a lasting impact on the local highway network, we'd love to hear from you.

About you

We welcome applications from people with a passion for quality, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to delivering excellent public services. Whether your experience comes from highway construction, civil engineering, site inspection, or a related field, you'll be confident working collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, developers, and communities. You'll be proactive, solution‑focused, and able to make informed decisions while maintaining high standards. Most importantly, you'll share our commitment to protecting and improving the highway network for everyone who uses it, helping to create safe, sustainable, and lasting infrastructure.

The successful candidate will hold a full and valid UK Driving Licence to use a works provided vehicle to work onsite independently and occasionally outside of office hours.
