We are working with a leading UK-based designer and manufacturer of specialist subsea cables and umbilical systems supplying global customers across energy, defence, seismic and specialist marine sectors. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint an experienced Electrical Cable Design engineer to strengthen a small, highly skilled design team. This is a key hire, aimed at building long-term technical capability and resilience within the business.
The Role
You will play a central role in the design, analysis and qualification of custom electro-mechanical ROV umbilical cables, working closely with manufacturing, testing, sales and project teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Mechanical and electrical design of ROV tethers and umbilicals (power, comms, fibre optic, coaxial)
- Conductor sizing, materials selection, armouring and overall cable configuration
- Writing test specifications and qualification procedures
- Providing technical support during manufacturing
- Investigating field issues and implementing design improvements
- Supporting customer engagement and technical sales activities
Minimum requirements:
- 5 years’ direct experience in electrical cable design and manufacture
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, mechanical engineering and materials
- Solid knowledge of cable construction fundamentals (geometry, lay lengths, helix angles, copper specs)
- Experience in an engineering/manufacturing environment
- Proficiency in 2D CAD (AutoCAD preferred); 3D CAD (SolidWorks) advantageous
- Confident communicator, comfortable working cross-functionally
- Experience designing ROV cables is ideal, but candidates from allied sectors (designing cables) such as offshore & maritime, defence, aerospace or electrical power are strongly encouraged to apply.
Location flexibility:
- Office-based roles in the South East or Cambridge
- Fully remote options for highly experienced ROV umbilical specialists
All candidates should expect to spend the initial onboarding period primarily on-site, with ongoing visits averaging around 2 days per month thereafter.
