The Role
You will act as the technical design authority for electronic systems, providing hands‑on leadership, mentoring, and strategic direction to a team of experienced engineers. You will identify design issues early, guide teams toward robust solutions, and ensure all designs meet demanding operational requirements. A key aspect of the role is shaping the future technical direction of the electronics capability. This includes researching emerging technologies, evaluating modern components and techniques, and running proof‑of‑concept activities to demonstrate their suitability.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Providing day‑to‑day technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to an electronics development team
- Acting as technical authority for electronic designs, ensuring quality, reliability and fitness for purpose
- Leading and conducting formal electronic design reviews
- Translating user requirements into robust technical solutions
- Setting strategic technical direction and maintaining awareness of emerging technologies
- Working closely with suppliers, manufacturers and academic partners
- Maintaining delivery momentum to meet operational deadlines
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or a related engineering discipline OR Postgraduate qualification (MEng or PhD) in an electronic engineering discipline
Desirable
- PhD in RF Engineering
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Essential Experience
- At least 12 years' electronics design experience
- Technical leadership of an electronics systems development team with multi‑disciplinary skills
- Day‑to‑day technical oversight, mentoring and guidance of engineers
- Significant experience in at least three of the following:
- RF design and analysis
- FPGA design (VHDL, simulation and hardware design)
- Schematic capture and multi‑layer PCB design
- Miniaturisation and design for manufacture
- Real‑time embedded systems (hardware and software design using C)
- Audio and communications systems
- Mechanical design and 3D modelling
