Job Description
A prestigious international law firm is seeking a Legal Engineer to join its expanding Innovation team in London.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, qualified lawyer who is passionate about the intersection of law and technology, particularly artificial intelligence
Key responsibilities
- Engage with partners, associates, trainees, and knowledge lawyers across relevant practice areas to understand how matters are run and identify processes where AI can add significant value.
- Translate legal requirements into structured prompts, workflows, and playbooks that the firm's AI platforms can execute reliably.
- Redesign traditional legal work for an AI-first approach by going beyond current AI-enabled workflows to innovate new ways of working.
- Establish credibility as a hands-on expert on legal problems solved with AI such as drafting contractual provisions, analysing filings or briefs, knowledge retrieval, and matter management.
- Design, build, prototype quickly, test rigorously for reliability, and hand over robust workflows on the firm's AI platforms to knowledge lawyers for ongoing ownership.
- Lead the firm's efforts on AI quality assurance and benchmarking by developing rigorous evaluation frameworks and ensuring high standards are maintained.
- Run regular engagement sessions with knowledge lawyers and applied AI experts to keep them updated on product developments from the Innovation team.
- Spot common solution patterns across practice areas to deduplicate effort where similar tools or workflows are being developed independently.
- Partner with knowledge lawyers on practice translation by helping encode their expertise into actionable AI-driven solutions while linking their work across the firm.
- Advise on appropriate technology choices from the firm's tech stack for specific tasks by gathering feedback from stakeholders and acting as the voice of practice into product management decisions.
Experience required
- Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or equivalent jurisdiction) with typically 5+ years' post-qualification experience at a top-tier firm; more junior candidates with relevant profiles are encouraged to apply.
- Substantive experience in Transactions & Advisory or Disputes at a top-tier firm with sufficient depth to discuss contracts or filings confidently with partners.
- Credibility among partners and associates demonstrated by your ability to hold meaningful conversations about contracts or deals on their merits while earning trust for process improvement suggestions.
- Curiosity about technology & artificial intelligence coupled with willingness to get hands-on with tools; no coding background required but comfort with prompts evaluations structured outputs essential.
- Direct recent experience using leading legal AI platforms (such as Harvey Legora Claude M365 Copilot) on real legal tasks including insight into their strengths weaknesses & practical application strategies.
- Track record of having shipped legal-tech adjacent products such as workflows playbooks evaluation sets internal tools prompt libraries or knowledge products rather than just theoretical designs.
- Comfort working collaboratively with product managers engineers vendors demonstrated by secondments tool roll-outs contributions outside traditional law roles or innovation team involvement.
- Strong structuring instinct enabling you to turn messy tacit ways of working into authorable testable shippable solutions that drive efficiency & clarity.
- Quality-minded discipline shown through rigorous testing before shipping designing robust evaluations & knowing when solutions require further refinement before deployment.
