My client, a leading financial services firm, are looking for a Financial Controls Accountant to join their Central Liverpool head office.

As part of a cross-functional hub of control-based experts, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring robust financial controls, supporting regulatory compliance, and driving a culture of risk awareness across the business.

What You\’ll Do
- Partner closely with process and control owners to ensure the design and operation of a robust financial control framework that effectively mitigates material financial reporting risks and fraud while ensuring full compliance with relevant regulatory standards.
- Provide insightful advice and constructive challenge during the development of new processes and controls within operational teams, ensuring that all identified risks are appropriately addressed through effective mitigation strategies.
- Report regularly to local Financial Controllers on the efficacy of the financial control environment, identifying any deficiencies and ensuring they are resolved in a timely, sustainable manner.
- Conduct thorough control validation activities using a risk-based approach, delivering high-quality documentation with clear conclusions that support ongoing assurance efforts.
- Oversee the maintenance of process documentation by line managers in accordance with established expectations, ensuring accuracy and completeness at all times.
- Drive effective remediation of process and control deficiencies by coordinating required actions and promoting compensatory behaviours that safeguard against material risks.
- Undertake periodic risk refreshes and deep dives into business processes to confirm that the financial control framework remains compliant, proportionate, and efficiently maintained.
- Leverage key management information from multiple sources—including incidents, assurance reports, and project updates—to gain a comprehensive understanding of operational risks impacting process performance.
- Collaborate proactively with business partners during change programmes to maintain or enhance the strength of the financial control environment throughout periods of transformation.
- Engage constructively with internal risk functions, internal audit teams, and external auditors to ensure alignment on assurance requirements and foster transparent communication.
What You Bring
- Qualified Accountant (ACA or similar)
- Demonstrated expertise in risk assessment and control frameworks within complex organisational settings is essential for this position.
- A recognised accounting qualification or substantial experience as an internal or external auditor—ideally within financial or insurance services—will enable you to excel in this role.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are required so you can convey technical concepts clearly to both finance professionals and non-specialist stakeholders alike.
- Proven ability to build dependable relationships with colleagues at all levels ensures effective collaboration across departments.
- Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end financial processes—including reporting systems—and confidence in challenging performance or recommending improvements is vital.
- Strong analytical skills allow you to interpret complex data sets accurately while developing practical solutions for enhancing controls or addressing deficiencies.
- Experience providing technical guidance on controls implementation supports your capacity to influence process owners positively.
- Sound judgement combined with pragmatism enables you to balance enforcement of rigorous standards with realistic business needs when making recommendations.
- Previous involvement in managing or mentoring junior team members would be advantageous as there may be opportunities for people management responsibility.
