Overview
As an Approved Electrician, you are responsible for electrical installations in commercial, industrial, or large residential environments. The work scope generally includes the following responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Containment Installation
- Installing containment systems such as trunking (plastic or metal), metal cable trays, cable baskets, and conduits (PVC or steel).
- Ensuring all containment is securely fixed, correctly routed, and compliant with site drawings and specifications.
- First Fix Work
- Laying out and fixing cables before walls and ceilings are sealed.
- Running and routing cables through containment (LV, data, fire alarm, etc.).
- Setting up back boxes, switch and socket positions according to layout drawings.
- Preparing for second fix (fitting outlets, switches, etc.).
- Other Duties
- Interpreting site drawings, electrical schematics, and technical documents.
- Ensuring compliance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
- Following site health & safety procedures (RAMS, permit-to-work, etc.).
- Working independently or supervising other electricians or mates.
- Conducting basic testing of installed circuits and containment continuity.
- Liaising with other trades and reporting to site supervisor or project manager.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
- JIB Approved Electrician card
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
- IPAF Card
- Experience with:
- Metal containment systems
- Large-scale site installations
- First fix electrical work
Typical Hours
- Monday to Friday (usually 7:30 am – 4:30 pm)
- Possible weekend work or overtime depending on the site/project
