An Electrician’s Mate supports qualified electricians on an industrial electrical installation project. A key part of this role involves cable pulling, preparing routes, and assisting with installation tasks to ensure electrical systems are installed safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Cable Pulling & Installation: Assist with pulling, laying, routing, and securing electrical cables (LV, MV, data, fire alarm, and control cables depending on site). Prepare cable routes including trunking, tray, basket, conduit, and floor ducts. Use correct methods for cable handling, avoiding damage and maintaining safe working loads. Support with termination preparation, such as labelling, dressing, and fixing cables in place for electricians.
- Site Support Duties: Help electricians with installation of sockets, lighting, containment, and distribution equipment. Measure, cut, and prepare materials and tools as required. Keep the work area tidy and ensure tools and equipment are organised.
- Health & Safety: Follow all site safety procedures (permits, PPE, safe manual handling). Ensure cable pulling operations are carried out safely, including using correct lifting/working techniques and communicating effectively with the pulling team. Identify hazards and report any issues to the supervisor or electrician.
- Tools & Equipment: Use hand tools and basic power tools safely (drills, saws, cable pulling tools, etc.). Assist with setting up cable drums, rollers, winches, and pulling aids as required.
- Communication & Teamwork: Work closely with electricians, supervisors, and other trades. Follow instructions accurately and communicate progress or issues promptly.
Skills & Competencies
- Basic electrical understanding (containment systems, cable types).
- Good physical fitness for manual tasks and pulling operations.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain high safety standards.
Typical Requirements
- ECS Electrician’s Mate card.
- Previous experience on construction or electrical sites (preferred).
- Manual handling training (beneficial).
- Full PPE.
