Role Overview

The CompEx Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, and troubleshooting electrical systems in hazardous areas classified under ATEX/IECEx standards. The role ensures all electrical work meets regulatory, safety, and site-specific requirements for explosive atmospheres (gas, vapour, or dust zones).

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical Installation & Maintenance
    • Install, terminate, and maintain Ex-rated equipment (Ex d, Ex e, Ex i, Ex p, etc.).
    • Perform electrical wiring, testing, and commissioning according to site and industry standards.
    • Carry out inspections in accordance with IEC 60079 series (Initial, Periodic, Sample, Detailed).
    • Diagnose and repair faults across LV electrical systems.
  • Hazardous Area Work
    • Ensure compliance with ATEX, IECEx, or NEC Class/Division requirements.
    • Select and verify correct cable types, glands, enclosures, and accessories for hazardous zones.
    • Read and interpret hazardous area classification drawings and data sheets.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Work under Permit-to-Work, Isolation (LOTO), and risk assessment systems.
    • Complete detailed documentation and inspection reports (electronic and paper).
    • Follow site safety procedures and contribute to toolbox talks.
  • Project & Team Support
    • Support commissioning teams and project engineers.
    • Liaise with supervisors, control-room operators, and instrumentation technicians.
    • Provide feedback on design or installation improvements.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • CompEx Ex01-Ex04 (minimum requirement for gas/vapour hazardous areas).
  • Recognised electrical qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, apprenticeship, City & Guilds).
  • 18th Edition (or local equivalent electrical regulations).
  • Valid ECS/CCNSG/Safety Passport (site-dependent).
  • Experience working in industrial or hazardous-area environments.

  • Experience with oil & gas, petrochemical, offshore, or chemical plant environments.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Familiarity with intrinsically safe (IS) systems and barriers.
