An opportunity has now arisen for an outgoing and creative individual to join the Department of External Affairs which is responsible for developing and maintaining the University’s distinctive brand within the Scottish and UK higher education sector.
We are looking for a dynamic storyteller who thrives on innovation and collaboration to lead on high-quality content creation and production within our External Affairs directorate. In this role, you will be the creative driver behind communications and marketing campaigns, shaping ideas that inspire, engage and resonate across digital and experiential platforms for use across the University.
You will collaborate with a wide range of content creators within the department to bring bold concepts to life while ensuring content aligns with brand strategy and cultural trends.
You will set the standard and will lead on delivering the University strategy for all types of content production, using it to elevate awareness of the university and engage with our stakeholders.
You will be strategic and proactive in your approach, able to manage a team of content creators to develop a range of dynamic content that can be used in all university campaigns and with all stakeholder engagement. You will be required to engage with a range of professional connections at all levels, from students to members of the University’s Executive.

Job Description
RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Communications
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Managing a flexible team of student content creators who will work on a range of content creation projects.
PURPOSE OF POST: To lead on the production and management of engaging, impactful and creative content for the purpose of strategic storytelling across multiple channels.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Lead brainstorming sessions to generate fresh, original campaign ideas.
- Develop multi-platform content strategies that prioritize creativity, audience engagement, and cultural relevance which deliver the university’s strategy and create impact on both an internal and external audience.
- Oversee the production of diverse content formats: social, video, short-form, long-form, interactive, experiential, while keeping across industry shifts, pop culture and platform trends to inspire innovative approaches.
- Partner with writers, designers, videographers and social media staff to execute campaigns to a high standard.
- Present concepts and campaigns within the department and to stakeholders with clarity and creativity.
- Balance creative vision with project timelines, budgets and deliverables.
- Develop and implement a creative content strategy, covering all forms of content and using multiple channels to deliver the university’s strategy and create impact on both an internal and external audience.
- Think beyond traditional approaches and bring fresh, sector-transcending ideas to inspire your team.
- Introduce a robust briefing process for the department when briefing in creative content projects and activity.
- Develop and lead a team of student content creators that aligns with the creative content strategy and ensures the authentic student voice is represented across all channels.

- Provide advice and guidance to University colleagues for creating content and related media, ensuring consistency in institutional design and messaging.

- Lead on and ensure compliance with accessibility, copyright and GDPR regulations and guidelines in relation to all University marketing and communications creative media.
- Provide analysis and reports of effectiveness of content media used across all activity including paid campaigns and organic social media channels.
Person Specification
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge
- Excellent understanding of how to develop and implement a comprehensive creative content strategy that aligns with institutional objectives and engages both internal and external audiences.
- Ability to generate innovative ideas, think creatively and motivate a team of creative content developers.
- Strong grasp of brand management principles and how to apply them consistently across a range of media formats and creators.
- Excellent understanding and expertise in the use of photography, video and relevant media software, including related equipment and tools.
- Understanding of best practice and regulations relating to media used in marketing and communications.
- Familiarity with analytics tools to measure content performance.
- Ability to conduct audience research and apply insights into campaigns.
- Knowledge of trends, platforms and emerging content technologies.
Experience
- Experience of developing and delivering impactful, trend-aware campaigns with the ability to bring innovative, cross-sector ideas that go beyond traditional media approaches.
- Strong background in storytelling, copywriting, and visual direction.
- Familiarity with social-first content creation and platform nuances (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc.).
- Proficiency in creative tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Figma, or equivalents).
- Comfortable pitching ideas and presenting to clients.
- Collaborative spirit with leadership skills to guide creative teams.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and report on the effectiveness of content, including both paid and organic digital campaigns.
- Experience briefing designers, writers, and multimedia creators.
- Ability to translate complex ideas into compelling stories.
- Experience of working collaboratively with stakeholders to enable effective content creation and sharing.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing structured briefing processes for creative content projects, ensuring clarity of objectives, alignment with strategic goals, and effective collaboration between stakeholders and creative teams.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge
- Knowledge of media asset organisation and distribution, including the use and implementation of Digital Asset Management (DAM) tools.
- Knowledge of managing and optimising channels, including video SEO to improve visibility and reach.
Experience
- Experience in building and managing content creation teams, including junior content creators.
