Role Description
This is a full-time Estimator role based on‑site at the Woodside Depot in Hailsham, East Sussex. The Estimator will prepare detailed cost estimates and tenders for highways, civil engineering, surfacing, and recycling projects, using drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and site information. Responsibilities include analysing project risks and opportunities, obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations, and preparing clear cost build‑ups and supporting documentation. The role involves working closely with operations, engineering, commercial, and procurement teams to align estimates with delivery methods, self‑delivery capabilities, and sustainability objectives. The Estimator will contribute to bid submissions, value engineering options, and post‑tender clarifications, while maintaining accurate cost databases and benchmarking information.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as an Estimator or in a similar commercial, engineering, or planning role.
- Strong estimating and cost‑planning skills for highways, civil engineering, surfacing, and recycling works, including measurement, take‑offs, and build‑ups.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and contract documentation.
- Experience obtaining, analysing, and negotiating supplier and subcontractor quotations, with awareness of market rates and construction logistics.
- Comfort with estimating or construction‑related software and solid computer skills for cost modelling and data analysis.
- Knowledge of UK highway standards and specifications (e.g. Specification for Highway Works) and awareness of sustainability and carbon‑reduction approaches in road construction.
- Strong numeracy, analytical thinking, and attention to detail, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple bids simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present estimates clearly.
