What Does a Civils Groundworker Do?
Groundworkers play an essential role on construction and civil engineering projects, preparing sites and completing the groundwork required before and during construction. Depending on the employer and project, your work could include:
- Preparing construction sites
- Excavation and groundwork activities
- Drainage and ducting
- Kerbing and paving
- Working around underground services
- Preparing surfaces and foundations
- Working safely around plant and equipment
- Highway and streetworks activities
- Following site plans, instructions and safe systems of work

If you're eligible for the Skills Bootcamp, there is no cost to you for the funded training. Your programme will include training designed to prepare you for the realities of working within civils and groundworks, including:

Who Can Apply?
This programme is funded through Skills Bootcamps, so eligibility criteria apply. You must:
- Be aged 19 or over
- Live in an eligible Leicester or Leicestershire area
- Have the legal right to live and work in the UK
- Meet the relevant Skills Bootcamp funding requirements
- Be able to attend and participate in the required training
- Be interested in progressing into the civils, groundworks, highways or utilities sector
- Be willing to engage with employment support and attend an interview for a suitable live vacancy
You may be unemployed, employed or self-employed, although different funding requirements may apply depending on your circumstances. Your full eligibility will be checked before your place on the programme is confirmed.
No Experience? No Problem.
Previous civils or groundworks experience isn't required. We're more interested in your attitude, reliability and willingness to learn. This could be particularly suitable if you're looking to change career, return to employment or move into a practical role within the construction and infrastructure sector. You should be comfortable with the fact that groundworks can involve physical work, working outdoors and working in different weather conditions.
