There is an opportunity at Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat Station for a Station Technician to join the team. This role would be suitable for someone whose resilience, leadership, and management skills are just as strong as their ability to keep Great Yarmouth and Gorleston lifeboats in perfect operational order.

Your role
The role of Senior Station Technician is focused on those individuals with an NVQ L4/SVQ L5 in an engineering discipline, or a time served engineering apprenticeship or a sound background and experience in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering. If these qualifications or experience are not held, then suitable individuals may be offered a Station Technician role in lieu.
As a Station Technician, most of your time will be utilised ensuring that the ALB Trent Lifeboat and its equipment work to the highest order, ensuring that the Lifeboat Station is well managed, and assisting training volunteer crew members – so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.
You will not be the sole individual responsible for the lifeboat and its equipment. Our existing mechanic volunteers are there to support you, your training and maintenance activity. The wider lifeboat staff and volunteers will be there to welcome and support you in all other aspects of the role.
Key responsibilities
- Inspiring and motivating your team; managing their progress by leading them on seagoing exercises, conducting shore-based training, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge.
- Meeting and talking to the general public about your station’s work.
- Taking a lead on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environment issues, helping to develop a positive culture within the station.
- Participating in the day-to-day running of the Lifeboat Station; this may include answering e-mails, ensuring maintenance records are maintained or updating the station’s monthly assurance report.
About you
You’ll have the ability to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the supporters locally and RNLI staff beyond, while acting as an ambassador for the station and the RNLI within the community.
- To be considered for the role of Technician at Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat Station, you will need: to be a passed-out RNLI ALB Mechanic or have relevant experience to achieve competence in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated leadership and management qualities, and the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential.
- Experience of fulfilling a Lifeboat Technician role or equivalent, with the capacity and willingness to develop skills in other areas of seagoing duties.
- Knowledge and experience of the operation, maintenance and repair of marine diesels would be desirable; an engineering background and mindset are essential.
- Maritime mechanical skills are not an absolute necessity; transferable skills from cars, HGVs, agricultural, plant, or generators can be trained for RNLI equipment.
- This post requires a valid driving licence and the ability to satisfy the Institution\’s medical and eyesight standards for a sea-going appointment.
