Regional support centre - Jersey (covering Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney)

The RNLI's purpose is simple, to save lives at sea and this is your opportunity to be part of a cutting-edge technical team at the RNLI in South West. We are looking for self-motivated Senior Regional Technicians with an enthusiastic approach to their work as well as mechanical and electrical knowledge who can work with full-time staff and volunteers to maintain some of the most prestigious and technologically advanced equipment at the RNLI.

Your role:

You will become part of a unique, diligent and professional team, responsible for providing a high level of expertise and troubleshooting capability within the Regional Technical Team, supporting Regional as well as operational Area technical activity. You will be working with Lifeboat Station Technicians, Lifeguards, Contractors, and other technical staff, completing planned and corrective maintenance and leading difficult and complex repairs of RNLI assets and equipment across South West. You will also be providing technical support and guidance to regional and station technicians, supporting their development and competence using mentoring and coaching. You’ll be supporting your Area Technical Manager to ensure all technical activity is conducted in accordance with RNLI standards and procedures.

About you:

You will have completed a time-served Engineering apprenticeship or have a sound background and experience in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic engineering, as well as have an England, Wales & Northern Ireland NVQ level 4, Scotland SVQ Level 5, ROI NFQ Level 6 in an engineering discipline. You will need to possess and demonstrate an excellent mechanical and electrical knowledge, with a wide knowledge of engineering processes and disciplines. You should have a desire to stay current in the use of existing technology and a willingness to learn and be involved in the roll out and assessment of new equipment which is constantly changing within the RNLI’s search and rescue assets. You will be passionate about helping to develop a high-performing and cross-skilled team, using mentoring and coaching to support the development and competence of regional and station technicians.

This role is suitable for someone that is self-motivated and willing to go that extra mile, with a wide knowledge of marine mechanical and electrical systems. Working either as a part of a team or under your own initiative to the highest of standards, you will have a first-fix approach to return RNLI search and rescue assets back on service as soon as possible. You will need to be comfortable taking on new ideas and undertaking training where needed.

Candidates will already be living within the Region & will be assigned to operational areas where a vacancy for a Senior Regional Technician exists. The successful candidates will be required to support technical activity across the Region area as required. The successful Candidate would need to live in Jersey for this role. You will require a willingness and flexibility to work out of hours when the need arises and participate in out of hours’ technical support. Travel with nights away will also be required throughout the RNLI South West region, as well as occasional travel to other RNLI operating areas.

The RNLI puts its equipment through some of the most severe conditions, so precision, attention to detail and high-quality workmanship is paramount. This post requires a valid driving licence.
