About the Role
Full job description
RML Roofing Contractor, Scaffold Management and 4 Construction Management make up MGT Group. We self-deliver commercial roofing, planned and reactive maintenance, scaffolding, and design and build refurbishment for blue-chip, national and high street retail clients. We're not just their contractor, we're their partner, and they audit us like one. We're looking for a Health & Safety Manager to own H&S across all three companies. You'll set the policy and report to the board, and you'll still be out on site with the teams. You'll own our safety management system, CDM compliance, RIDDOR reporting and HSE contact, plus our accreditations (CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor). You'll be the person our clients speak to about safety. You'll report to the CEO and attend the board for H&S items. But this isn't a desk job. You'll be out with our maintenance gangs and on our project sites every week. You'll check site set-up, access and edge protection, and make sure every job is done the way the RAMS says it will be. You'll stop unsafe work, sort it with the supervisor there and then, and deliver toolbox talks and inductions face to face.
Owning H&S for the group - H&S policy, strategy and the management system across RMLFS, Scaffold Management and 4CM. Competent person. RIDDOR reporting and all HSE contact. Annual policy review and keeping up with legislation. Monthly H&S board report covering inspections, incidents, training, trends and actions. Setting the annual H&S objectives and delivering them.
Out with the gangs - Out on site with the maintenance gangs and on live project sites across the country. Planned and unannounced inspections, weighted to work at height. Checking the job is being done the way the RAMS says. Stopping unsafe work and sorting it with the supervisor on the spot. Delivering toolbox talks, briefings and inductions face to face.
Site set-up and CDM - Checking welfare, signage, segregation, exclusion zones, access/egress, permits and storage. Owning CDM 2015 compliance: construction phase plans, F10s where the project is notifiable, and principal contractor duties. Signing off RAMS for higher-risk work. Pre-starts and mobilisation on the bigger projects.
Inspections and records - Every inspection done on SafetyCulture on the day, then logged on the QSHE boards with the report attached. Raising NCRs and chasing them to close-out. Fixing the root cause of repeat issues.
Keeping the files right - Keeping all H&S paperwork current across the three companies: site folders, construction phase plans, RAMS, permits, induction and briefing records, the training matrix, harness and equipment certificates, PPE issue, subcontractor competence and accident/near‑miss records.
Accidents and incidents - Leading investigations start to finish, from attending site to root cause and the written report. Handling RIDDOR and HSE notifications. Following corrective actions through and sharing lessons learned across the group.
Accreditations and clients - Owning CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, client questionnaires and audits. The H&S face of the group for blue-chip clients. Owning the training plan and budget, and booking training, cards and medicals.
What you'll need:
- NEBOSH Construction or General Certificate (Diploma a bonus)
- CMIOSH, or working towards it
- Experience managing H&S for a contractor, including RIDDOR, investigations and HSE liaison
- Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015 and principal contractor duties
- Construction site experience, particularly work at height
- Experience running accreditations and client audits
- Credibility with operatives and directors alike: someone who can stop a job, explain why and keep the gang onside
- Happy on the road and covering the whole country
- Full UK driving licence
A roofing, cladding or scaffolding background is a big advantage, as is scaffold inspection competence. Vehicle provided, and we'll support further professional development for the right person.
Pay: £31,900.00-£62,800.00 per year
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Liverpool L3 9DG
