RM Recruit is working in partnership with our Lambeth based housing client to recruit an experienced Income Officer for 4 months with the possibility of extension, offering a hybrid working arrangement.

The Income Officer will play a key role in maximising rental income while supporting tenants to sustain their tenancies. You will manage a patch, work proactively to prevent arrears, and provide advice on rent, welfare benefits, and financial inclusion.

Main duties include:

  • Maximise income from current and former tenants through proactive and supportive income recovery practices
  • Deliver a high-quality, customer-focused service, ensuring tenants understand their rent responsibilities
  • Monitor rent accounts, identify potential arrears early, and maintain risk registers
  • Carry out personal contact with tenants, providing housing benefit and financial advice, including complex cases
  • Lead on rent collection for a designated patch and other cases assigned by the Senior Income Officer
  • Ensure services are delivered in line with agreed performance targets
  • Prepare legal documentation and represent the organisation in court where required

As the ideal candidate, you will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to balance firmness and empathy. You will possess strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, particularly around repayment plans and debt resolution. Good numeracy and IT skills, including experience using housing management systems and spreadsheets will hold you in good stead along with strong organisational and time management skills. Being able to manage varied caseloads effectively and having a customer-focused approach, supporting tenants to sustain their tenancies is highly desirable.

In order to be considered for this role, you must have proven experience in income collection or rent recovery, ideally within social or private housing and experience in a customer-facing, target-driven environment. Case management experience, including legal preparation and court representation for arrears recovery and experience providing income, financial, or debt management advice is highly desired.

You will have strong understanding of housing legislation, including the Housing Act 1985 and eviction procedures and good knowledge of Housing Benefit and Universal Credit. Good knowledge of the Pre-Action Protocol for rent arrears and a good understanding of the social housing environment is essential.

This role is predominantly office based with one day WFH and there is scope for the role to be extended.
