The Building Safety Officer will support the organisation in meeting its statutory and regulatory responsibilities relating to building safety, particularly in relation to higher-risk residential buildings. Working closely with the Building Safety Manager and wider compliance teams, the role will focus on fire safety compliance, risk management, contractor oversight, and resident safety engagement.

Main duties include:

  • Assist in maintaining and reviewing Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Building Safety Case documentation.
  • Ensure fire safety actions and recommendations are tracked and completed within required timescales.
  • Use internal IT systems to raise work orders, monitor compliance activity, and maintain accurate safety records.
  • Support the management of building safety compliance programmes, including fire safety, asbestos management, and water safety.
  • Monitor and oversee remedial works, including compartmentation, fire doors, alarm systems, emergency lighting, smoke control systems, and related fire safety measures.
  • Track statutory servicing and inspection programmes such as fire alarms, emergency lighting, and dry risers.
  • Ensure building safety information is maintained in line with the Golden Thread of information requirements.
  • Carry out compliance checks, site inspections, and post-inspections where required.
  • Review contractor performance and ensure any corrective actions or quality issues are addressed.
  • Maintain accurate compliance data and support reporting against performance targets and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a point of contact for internal teams, residents, and external contractors regarding building safety matters.
  • Support the delivery of the organisation’s Resident Engagement Strategy in relation to fire safety.
  • Work with housing teams to identify residents who may be vulnerable or require additional fire safety support.
  • Support the completion and review of Person-Centred Fire Risk Assessments (PCFRAs) where required.
  • Assist in implementing appropriate mitigation measures, including Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs), installation of specialist detection or safety equipment, enhanced communication and support arrangements, and liaison with external agencies where appropriate.

As the ideal candidate, you will be available immediately / short notice and the role benefits from hybrid working, typically 4 days in the office and 1 day working from home, with some flexibility around working days. The role will also require travel around the Walsall area as and when required. You will possess experience working in building safety, compliance, or asset management within a housing environment. Knowledge of fire safety legislation, including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and emerging building safety legislation is highly desirable coupled with an understanding of risk assessment processes and safety management systems.
