With support from the design team, you will turn conceptual ideas into reality, working closely with the Innovations team to bring new products to life.
The role of the product designer can cover every aspect of a design from early concept sketches through to the final product including its packaging, allowing you to build several design skills through project work. Candidates will be expected to support other design-related activities such as creating and amending instruction manuals, updating stored part files/folders and producing templates for packaging. Candidates should have a good understanding of sketching, concept design, model making, 2D drawings as well as a strong ability to communicate visually.
Responsibilities- Work closely with the NPD team to understand the requirements and background of new concepts.
- Use SolidWorks to create 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings of new designs.
- Use KeyShot to create 3D rendered images that accurately represent the design.
- Create prototypes to validate designs, using the 3D printer where suitable.
- Develop understanding of the educational market and the safety requirements involved.
- Support all aspects of design throughout project development, including reviewing CAD, testing samples, and updating designs as required.
- Use the Adobe Creative Suite to design packaging and instruction manuals for new products or update previous versions to be compliant with new changes.
- Assist with file management and storage of design files.
- Attend regular project and team meetings to keep all relevant team members and stakeholders updated with design information.
- A solid educational background, including technical and creative courses at A-level or equivalent.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – credible, open, and approachable, with the ability to adjust your manner to suit your audience.
- Ability to communicate design concepts through sketches or models.
- Ability to use SolidWorks or similar.
- Awareness of graphic design packages like Adobe suite; prior experience will be beneficial.
- Strong organisational skills to manage design revisions and keep project folders well organised.
- Willingness to learn on the job and to develop design skills through project work and self-training.
