Position Summary
To support RM Sotheby’s commitment to industry-leading research, the (Junior) Researcher plays an integral role as an instigator and driving force within the company’s Editorial and Research department. The successful candidate will bring an enthusiasm for collector cars and a hunger for knowledge to the role. They will be highly organised and able to thrive in a fast-paced and exciting work environment. The (Junior) Researcher will initiate the study of car consignments for auction, private sales, and other platforms; they will support the Specialist and Editorial/Research teams by sourcing data and information from internal and external archives, build relationships with key industry contacts, and signpost ongoing research for the best available sources. This person is expected to manage large amounts of information against firm deadlines while maintaining an exacting level of attention to detail at all times. The (Junior) Researcher is expected to work from our UK office in Richmond five days per week. Applicants for this position will only be considered if they have demonstrable collector car industry experience or knowledge.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Instigate and support the research process for cars consigned to auction, private sale, and other platforms
- Create and maintain lasting relationships with key industry research contacts
- Provide reference services to Specialists, the Research/Editorial team, and clients; recommend and signpost sources for research among colleagues and clients
- Acquire and source key information and research from internal and external archives
- Receive, organise, digitise, and preserve history files
- Research and acquire historic photographs
- Provide privacy protection and ensure copyright compliance
- Maintain research library and archive
- Catalogue cars and memorabilia in person when necessary
- Travel to auctions and private collections to support research and cataloging trips
- Other duties as required by manager
Requirements
- Classic car knowledge considered an asset; desire to learn is most important
- Degree in History or research-related degree preferred
- Self-starter with team-oriented mentality; ability to operate solely with minimal supervision
- Highly organised with a meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics considered an asset; particularly with customer relationship management (CRM) software solutions
- Ability to speak or read other languages considered a plus, but not required
- Occasional overtime is required to meet deadlines during busy periods; extra hours worked are rewarded with compensation or time off in lieu at the reporting manager’s discretion
