Our client is a leading energy trading organisation seeking an experienced Physical Power Trader to join its London-based trading team. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in optimising physical power positions across European markets while working within a highly commercial and entrepreneurial environment.
The Role
- Manage and optimise physical electricity portfolios, identifying trading opportunities, and executing strategies across day-ahead, intraday, balancing, and ancillary service markets.
- Work closely with asset optimisation, risk, analytics, and commercial teams to maximise portfolio value while managing market exposure.
Key Responsibilities
- Trade physical power products across UK and European electricity markets.
- Optimise generation, storage, and renewable asset portfolios.
- Execute trading strategies across day-ahead, intraday, balancing, and ancillary service markets.
- Monitor market fundamentals including supply/demand dynamics, weather, interconnector flows, and regulatory developments.
- Develop and implement trading strategies to capture market opportunities and enhance portfolio performance.
- Collaborate with quantitative analysts and developers to improve trading tools and market models.
- Manage risk within approved trading limits and ensure compliance with internal controls.
- Build and maintain relationships with market participants, brokers, exchanges, and counterparties.
Requirements
- Proven experience trading physical power markets, ideally within the UK and/or Continental Europe.
- Strong understanding of electricity market structures, balancing mechanisms, and transmission constraints.
- Demonstrated track record of generating P&L through physical power trading and asset optimisation.
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
- Strong understanding of market fundamentals and risk management principles.
- Ability to make informed trading decisions in fast-moving market environments.
- Degree educated in Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Finance, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Experience with trading and analytical platforms commonly used within power markets is advantageous.
