Role Description

The Fire Damper Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Chorley, responsible for surveying, testing, and maintaining fire dampers and associated fire safety systems. Day-to-day tasks include carrying out fire damper inspections, functional tests, and remedial works in line with relevant standards and client specifications. The role involves preparing clear reports, documenting test results, and ensuring accurate records are maintained for regulatory compliance and client handover. The Fire Damper Engineer will collaborate with project managers, other engineers, and site personnel to plan works, access systems safely, and minimize disruption to building operations. The role also includes participating in broader fire and ventilation safety activities, supporting continuous improvement of processes, and upholding RJ Urmson Group’s safety and quality culture.

Qualifications

  • Experience in fire damper survey, testing, and maintenance, with strong knowledge of fire safety regulations and relevant standards (e.g., BS, HTM).
  • Background in mechanical or electrical engineering, HVAC systems, or building services, ideally with on-site commissioning or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and site-specific protocols, and to follow method statements and risk assessments accurately.
  • Strong reporting and documentation skills, including clear written communication and attention to detail in recording test results and remedial actions.
  • Competence in using hand tools, testing equipment, and access systems safely, with a solid understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team in live, client-facing environments.
  • Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical, electrical, or building services engineering; industry certifications in fire safety or HVAC are an advantage.
  • Full UK driving license and willingness to travel to client sites as required.
