Technical Advisor, Equator Principles

Approx. 3 days/week | 2 years Fixed Term Contract | Remote

About the Role

Rivit Search is proud to partner with the Equator Principles (EP) to appoint a Technical Advisor. This is a pivotal new role focused on strengthening the global adoption and practical implementation of the EPs.

The Equator Principles are the world’s leading environmental and social (E&S) risk management framework for project and project-related finance. With around 130 financial institutions (EPFIs) globally, the EPs set a global benchmark for how banks and other financial institutions assess and manage E&S risks in projects. Over 1,400 transactions in 2023 alone were structured under the EPs, demonstrating both the reach and real-world relevance of this practitioner-led initiative.

To support its continued evolution, EP is seeking a seasoned technical practitioner to help strengthen the consistency, quality, and impact of EP implementation. Reporting to the CEO, and working closely with the Secretariat and Steering Committee, the Technical Advisor will play a key role in shaping guidance, responding to technical queries, and helping EPFIs apply the EPs with confidence and rigour.

This is a high-impact role with a global scope, offering significant flexibility. You’ll engage with EPFI E&S colleagues worldwide, contribute to the future of sustainable finance, and work at the heart of a globally respected ESG initiative.

Key Responsibilities

This is a hands-on role within a small but high-performing global team. You’ll be expected to own technical outputs, shape guidance and tools, and support capacity building across a network of around 130 EPFIs.

Reporting to the CEO, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert technical oversight across EPFI working groups and steering their outputs in line with agreed Terms of Reference
  • Developing and delivering EP implementation guidance, training and capacity building, ensuring practical, transaction-level relevance and consistency
  • Supporting the CEO in raising the profile of the Equator Principles, including engagement with executive suite at EPFIs and other key stakeholders
  • ‘Holding the pen’ on technical guidance and other outputs. Take ownership of drafting and refining key documents such as Guidance Notes, implementation tools, technical summaries, and proposed updates to the EPs
  • Responding to technical queries from EPFIs on interpretation of EPs, Signatory Rules and Guidance Notes
  • Coordinating and quality-assuring outputs from Working Groups, avoiding duplication, aligning technical direction, and ensuring timely delivery
  • Helping deliver the EP Annual Meeting, Technical Workshops (as appropriate) and contributing to outreach and training activities at various events
  • Supporting external stakeholder engagement, including the IFC, OECD, BankTrack, other CSOs, supranational bodies, institutions and regulators

The Successful Candidate

You are a senior E&S practitioner who combines technical depth with the ability to operate independently and drive outcomes in complex settings. You’ll likely be advising on complex infrastructure or energy projects, or shaping ESG risk frameworks within a financial institution, consultancy, or industry platform, with a strong understanding of how environmental and social risk management standards are applied in practice. You will have experience managing senior stakeholders in complex, multi-stakeholder environments, often across regions and time zones.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience applying the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards in financial institutions or consultancies
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership, navigate ambiguity, and deliver high-quality outputs with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to advise on the practical implementation of E&S risk frameworks at the project level, and not just oversight or management
  • Experience managing or influencing cross-functional working groups, industry alliances, or sustainability standard bodies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence and gravitas to influence diverse stakeholders
  • Understanding of sustainable finance products, project and infrastructure finance, and commercial banking
  • Strong cultural awareness, gained through international or multi-lateral environments
  • Fluency in English, with availability to align work hours with Europe and travel up to 2–3 times per year for annual and regional meetings

Why Join the Equator Principles

This is more than a technical advisory role, it’s a chance to shape the E&S foundation of global project and sustainable finance. You’ll work directly with the world’s leading commercial banks and ECAs, supporting their efforts to improve environmental and social risk management through the Equator Principles.

You’ll contribute to strengthening the practical tools, training and guidance used by thousands of practitioners, and support the implementation of EP4 at the transaction and project level, where impacts to people and planet are avoided, reduced and mitigated.

Your work will influence how sustainable finance is delivered across emerging markets, infrastructure systems, and real-economy transition pathways, all within a flexible, remote, and globally connected role.
