Rivan Industries (Rivan.com) is a synthetic fuel company designed to decarbonise heavy industry. We aim to make synthetic fuel cheaper than fossil fuels and sustain life on earth by keeping the CO2 locked underground.
We’ve design and manufacture modular synthetic fuel plants consisting of a DAC system, an Alkaline Electrolyser, and a Sabatier Reactor, vertically integrating with off-grid DC solar and the European gas-grid. Here’s our manifesto on how we plan to do it (https://rivan.com/the-case-for-synthetic-fuels/). We’ve recently deployed the UK’s largest synthetic fuel plant and are planning to 1000x this scale in the next 2 years.
We’re looking for a n Engineering Technician to help drive each of our sub-systems forward. You’ll be hands on, building test rigs, debugging equipment, organising workshop inventory, and helping execute large-scale system builds. You’ll be working everyday at our HQ in South London helping us speed up the development of our electrolyser, run reactor tests, and integrate our DAC system.
As a company, we have one single goal – reduce the levalised cost of methane to the point drilling stops and companies mine the sky for carbon. If you urge to make a difference in the real-world, surrounded by people you admire doing great work with intensity, this is for you.
The role:
Design, build and execute tests
- Design effective test rigs to validate engineering assumptions across fluids, thermals or electrical systems. This might look like a test rig that has a PID loop to test the heat transfer rate of a Hx with different flow-rates and DeltaT.
- Assemble those rigs, including all pipework, fittings, skids, electrical requirements (with an electrical engineer), and any machining that is required. This can be OTS parts, or may include some light CAD work and internal or external part processing.
- Execute the test plan! Bring everything together, and systematically go through a test protocol to get the results we want against the spec’d parameters.
Assembly support and validation
- Help accelerate the assembly of large system integrations. This will include preparation, parts being ordered, areas clearer, lifting equipment if required, and assembly protocol (tightening, lubrication, measurements against spec)
- Execute factory acceptance tests (FATs) on new hardware that arrives at HQ or before shipment from the supplier.
Equipment maintenance
- Maintain our (growing) range of heavy machinery, including laser cutters, water-jet cutters, drills, lathes, mills, and welding equipment
- Keep a list of spares, jigs and material to use across all machinery
Core skills:
- 2-3 years professional experience in relevant environment (workshop, factory, or laboratory)
- Practical examples of hands-on project builds
- Engineering degree or background (apprenticeship or other)
- Personal projects! What have you tinkered or built yourself?
The things that are important to us for this role:
- Execution history. What have you built or designed before where you had the responsibility?
- Reasoning by first principles. Can you deconvolute complex scenarios into their foundational truths or parts?
- Urgency. We don’t have time to wait, are you comfortable with a high-degree of risk and pressure to move fast?
- Grit. How relentless will you be despite set-backs? We’re going up against some big opposition.
The things we don’t care about very much:
- Where you went to school / education
- Where you have worked previously
Specifics:
- £30-40K Salary depending on experience
- Share options as part of the early team
- In-person work at our HQ in Bermondsey, South-East London
- Flexible time-off
