The Senior Consultant will be a member of the RINA Power System Engineering team based in Manchester and will execute the electro-mechanical design of substations, ensuring solutions meet client requirements, applicable legislation, and relevant industry standards. The role involves leading and collaborating within a multidisciplinary team to deliver a wide range of local and international projects for commercial, industrial, and utility clients.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • 8+ years in transmission and distribution engineering (or 7+ years with a masters/PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field).
  • Power system design experience up to 132 kV (preferably up to 400 kV) across industrial, distribution and transmission networks.
  • Extensive utility substation engineering experience, with strong understanding of legislation, regulations and industry standards.
  • Strong knowledge and application of UK electrical engineering standards and regulations.
  • Substation primary design / protection & control design.
  • SCADA system design and development.
  • Single-line diagrams and substation layouts.
  • CT/VT selection and calculations.
  • Auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including technical reports and client documentation.
  • Ability to assess issues within broader system contexts and understand cross-disciplinary impacts.
  • Experience mentoring and developing graduate engineers and consultants.
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
  • Professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Engineering Council.
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma, or NVQ Level 3 in a Health & Safety discipline).
  • Substation safety and access training (e.g., NSI 30, BESC: AIM, or equivalent).
  • Formal training in CDM 2015, construction safety, and impressed voltage hazards.
  • Good understanding of UK environmental and waste management legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated collaborative team approach, including knowledge sharing, idea development, and recognition of team contributions.
  • Experience supporting business development and consulting activities (advantageous).
  • Experience in installation and commissioning activities (desirable).
