Reporting to: Platforms Engineering Manager

The role

As a Platform Engineer in our Cloud Foundations team, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing and maintaining our cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You'll be responsible for ensuring the scalability, security, and reliability of our cloud environment, enabling Rightmove to deliver innovative solutions efficiently and cost-effectively. This team focuses on setting standards rather than fighting fires, defining cloud governance, controls and guardrails so developers can deploy confidently on a secure, audited platform. You’ll work closely with database engineers and the security team, shaping cloud foundations and helping developers understand how the platform works—from Kubernetes through to core cloud concepts. The role balances building and evolving the platform with light‑touch support, handling rare incidents, and focusing on making the platform more resilient for the future.

What you’ll be doing

  • Designing and building secure, scalable cloud infrastructure on GCP that supports our products as they grow.
  • Helping move legacy and on‑premise workloads into the cloud, and improving things along the way.
  • Automating how our infrastructure is built and managed using Terraform, so we can move faster and more reliably.
  • Running and evolving our container platforms using GKE and Helm.
  • Shaping how our cloud networking works, including load balancing, CDNs, API gateways, and service mesh.
  • Making sure our platforms are secure, resilient, and aligned with cloud security best practices.
  • Setting up and maintaining monitoring, logging, and observability so issues are easy to spot and fix.
  • Keeping an eye on performance and spend, and finding smart ways to optimise both.
  • Digging into complex infrastructure problems and working with others to resolve them.

What you’ll bring to this role

  • Hands‑on experience working as a cloud infrastructure engineer, ideally with a strong focus on GCP.
  • Confidence using Infrastructure as Code, especially Terraform.
  • Experience building and running containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes (GKE).
  • Exposure to service mesh technologies and how they support modern platforms.
  • A solid understanding of networking and how it all comes together in the cloud.
  • Experience using CI/CD pipelines (such as GitLab CI) to deploy and manage infrastructure.
  • Comfort working with at least one programming or scripting language in an infrastructure context.
  • Experience with secrets management, monitoring, logging, and observability tooling.
  • A good grasp of cloud security principles and compliance considerations.
  • Practical experience optimising cloud costs and using resources effectively.

It’d be great if you also had (but it’s not essential)

  • Experience with event‑driven or microservices architectures, such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Exposure to tuning or operating search or data platforms like Elasticsearch.
  • Familiarity with serverless concepts and when they make sense.
  • Experience improving infrastructure performance and reliability.
  • An understanding of AI/ML infrastructure needs on GCP.

What we offer

  • Cash plan for dental, optical and physio treatments.
  • Private Medical Insurance, Pension and Life Insurance, Employee Assistance Plan.
  • 27 days holiday plus two (paid) volunteering days a year to give back, and holiday buy schemes.
  • Hybrid working pattern with 2 days in the office.
  • Contributory stakeholder pension.
  • Life assurance at 4x your basic salary to a spouse, family member or other nominated person in your life.
  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Paid leave for maternity, paternity, adoption & fertility.
  • Travel Loans, Bike to Work scheme, Rental Deposit Loan.
  • Charitable contributions through Payroll Giving and donation matching.
  • Access deals and discounts on things like travel, electronics, fashion, gym memberships, cinema discounts and more.
