An HGV Technician/Fitter is a highly responsible role focused on ensuring heavy goods vehicles are safe, roadworthy, and compliant with DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) standards to ensure compliance with the company’s operator licence. The role will include responsibility for servicing, diagnosing, and repairing a range of commercial vehicles and trailers.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Preventative Maintenance: Booking and liaising with maintenance garages to ensure vehicle inspections and pre-MOT inspections are carried out at agreed intervals in accordance with the maintenance planner.
- Defect Reporting: All drivers' defect reports will be given to a HGV Technician/Fitter with sufficient authority to ensure appropriate action is taken. This might include taking vehicles out of service.
- Documentation: Complete and review all the necessary paperwork, including vehicle defect reports, vehicles off road documents, vehicle inspection paperwork, retaining maintenance invoices/delivery notes, completing tyre management and torque records regularly.
- Quality Assurance/Gate checks: To carry out regular quality assurance or gate checks to ensure drivers are carrying out daily vehicle checks in accordance with training provided.
- Breakdown Response: Supporting roadside breakdowns and urgent repairs when necessary.
- Workshop Safety: Maintaining a clean and organised work environment.
Reporting to: Company director and Transport Manager
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Experience: Must be technically competent and operationally aware of the safety standards. Be familiar with techniques of vehicle diagnosis and reporting and possess a sound working knowledge of the relevant inspection manuals produced by DVSA.
- Qualifications: Have relevant technical qualification and achieve an automotive technical accreditation such as IRTEC.
- License: A full UK Driving Licence is essential, with Class 1 or 2 often required.
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary: £15 per hour
- Shift Work: Part-time position for 4-5 hours per day
