HGV Class 1 Driver
Right Now Group are recruiting for an HGV Class 1 Driver to join an established transport and logistics business operating within the freight and air cargo sector.
This is a permanent position working predominantly with Freight Forwarding customers, completing collections and deliveries from shippers across the local and regional area.
You will spend the majority of your time driving a Class 1 articulated vehicle, completing multiple collections and deliveries depending on the requirements of the day. Routes will vary, with the furthest regular journeys generally being Birmingham and back.
The role will predominantly involve general freight, alongside a small amount of Dangerous Goods. This is also a hands-on driving position, and you will occasionally be required to move freight using a pump truck, so candidates must be physically fit and comfortable getting involved when required.
Although the position is predominantly Class 1 driving, flexibility is important and there may occasionally be a requirement to drive a Luton van to support the wider transport operation.
Key Responsibilities of an HGV Class 1 Driver
- Complete daily collections and deliveries for Freight Forwarding customers
- Drive a Class 1 articulated vehicle as the primary vehicle
- Collect freight directly from shippers and deliver into freight and logistics facilities
- Complete multiple collections and deliveries throughout the working day
- Carry out local and regional routes depending on daily customer requirements
- Complete longer-distance runs when required, typically no further than Birmingham and back
- Safely load, secure and transport freight
- Assist with loading and unloading where required
- Use a pump truck to move freight when necessary
- Handle predominantly general freight alongside a small amount of Dangerous Goods
- Occasionally drive a Luton van to support the wider operation
- Check collection and delivery documentation for accuracy
- Obtain signatures and Proof of Delivery documentation
- Communicate with the Transport team regarding collections, deliveries, delays and changes to planned routes
- Liaise professionally with shippers, Freight Forwarders and customers
- Complete daily vehicle checks and report any defects
- Ensure freight remains safe and secure throughout transportation
- Maintain high standards of Health & Safety, security and professionalism
Skills & Experience Required for an HGV Class 1 Driver
- Minimum 1 year's professional HGV driving experience
- Valid Class 1 / Category C+E Driving Licence
- Valid Driver CPC
- Valid Digital Tachograph Card
- Maximum of 3 points on driving licence
- Previous experience within Freight, Transport, Air Cargo or Logistics advantageous
- Comfortable completing multiple collections and deliveries
- Confident completing local and regional routes, including journeys up to Birmingham and back
- Physically fit and comfortable with the hands-on elements of the position
- Comfortable using a pump truck to move freight when required
- Willing to occasionally drive a Luton van to support the operation
- Good understanding of drivers' hours and road transport regulations
- Reliable, punctual and professional
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Flexible regarding start times depending on booked work
- Dangerous Goods experience advantageous but not essential
As the business operates as a CAA Regulated Agent, successful candidates must be able to complete the required security screening, including a clean DBS check and five-year checkable employment history/references.
Salary & Benefits for an HGV Class 1 Driver
- £38,000 - £42,000 depending on experience
- Monday to Friday
- Standard working hours of 08:00 - 18:00
- 10-hour shifts
- Flexibility required around start times depending on booked collections and deliveries
- Occasional earlier starts may be required
- Permanent, full-time position
