Rig Locums are currently seeking Consultant Physicians with an interest in Respiratory Medicine for an Permanent role in Wales.

Roles and expectations

  • Deliver a consultant-led respiratory service for the diagnosis
and management of both outpatients and inpatients.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further
develop local respiratory services, with focus on thoracic oncology and interventional
pulmonology, or domiciliary NIV and sleep medicine. However, other interests would also
    be considered.
  • Participate in the general medical on-call rota and post-take ward rounds,
providing leadership and support to the on-call medical team.
  • Take consultant responsibility for allocated inpatients, with support from
a designated team of junior doctors based on the respiratory ward.
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of junior doctors and medical students. Many
consultants are Educational and Named Clinical Supervisors to junior doctors, and
most consultants are offered honorary undergraduate clinical teacher status
  • Partake in clinical governance meetings and processes. All consultants are expected to be
involved in regular clinical audit and quality improvement projects within their
multidisciplinary team. Participation in an open, no-blame culture with patient safety
incident reporting, serious incident reviews and morbidity / mortality meetings is also
    expected.
  • Follow the policies of the Health Board and Hospital, and attend mandatory training.
  • Attend relevant business meetings with management.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge, skills and attitude through personal and professional
development with lifelong learning and regular continuing professional development (CPD)
activities in order to meet the requirements of the RCP CPD diary and the Good
Medical Practice criteria required for annual appraisal. The Health Board is committed
to providing time and financial support for these activities.
  • Ensure the necessary completion of annual appraisals as well as colleague
and patient feedback assessments required for 5-yearly revalidation.
  • Be managerially accountable to the respiratory clinical lead, the clinical director for
medicine, and the medical directorate general manager (DGM), and engage in
    an annual job plan review.

    Job plan

  • This job would give a job plan of 26 weeks on the wards and 16 weeks off the wards. On-call commitments occur when covering
inpatients on the wards. In contrast to English job plans, those in Wales come with 3
supporting professional activities (SPA) sessions as standard (2 SPAs for revalidation),
though the 3rd SPA (for teaching, training, research, clinical governance and service
development) will need to be justified at subsequent annual job plan reviews. A 10
sessions job plan therefore comes with 7 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions as standard in
Wales. A session is 3-4 hours with an average of hours over the working week, as
opposed to the English 4-hour programmed activities (PA).
There is some scope for varying the session commitment when on the wards, doing
    one clinic rather than two.
