CPL UK are working alongside a large acute Trust in the South of England who require an experienced SHO or junior registrar to take a long term locum in the Oncology unit.

Please see a summary of the fixed term post to be filled by a locum doctor – this is flexible to accommodate an experienced SHO or a junior CT3 / ST3 doctor. Some experience in Oncology or Haematology is desirable.

This post is based at one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country treating over half a million patients each year. Their purpose-built Haematology-Oncology Centre is a 39‑bed unit on one floor across 3 wards and the Haematology-Oncology Day Unit (HODU) is staffed by 13 full and part‑time trained chemotherapy nurses and treat approximately 80 – 90 patients per day. Their Acute Oncology Service (AOS) has six dedicated acute oncology assessment and treatment beds for patients presenting with complications from cancer treatment and the management of acute / emergency cancer symptoms. This service was commended in Quality in Care – Oncology Excellence Awards in 2013

The appointee will work together with 5 Band 5 Acute Oncology Practitioner Nurses and Medical Oncology ST3+ trainees at Acute Oncology admission Bay for 6 to 12 months covering a range of tumour types. The post may be attractive to a candidate who have completed Foundation and / or Core Medical competencies (or equivalent) and wish to gain further experience in Medical Oncology before pursing ST3 training.

Although this is a non-training post, the successful candidate will be assigned a consultant educational supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There are regular educational, clinical governance and departmental meetings, as well as Wessex Regional Oncology study days. The department is committed to clinical research with participation in clinical trials in all major tumour sub‑sites. There are also a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.

Fixed Term Contract for 12 months.

Full GMC registration is essential and Locums must hold a valid UK passport or Work Rights for the UK.

Job Summary – may include :

  • Provide day to day care for Acute Oncology admission, together with AOS NPs.
  • Participate in the Outreach covering of Dayunit in emergency, for Dayunit in set SOPs.
  • On Oncology on‑call rota (Daily 8-6 pm Mon – Friday, or Sunday 0900 – 2100)
  • Provide day to day clinical supervision of junior doctors in Oncology Admission Bay.
  • Provision of clinical support to oncology Day procedures such as Ascites Drain, or Chest drains.
  • Co‑ordinate and implement specialist care for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or complications of cancer, initiate rapid referral to relevant oncology sub‑site team and / or palliative care team.
  • Triage New presentation of Cancer unknown primary to CUP team.
  • Participate in GP Calls for advice.
  • Provide medical support for Haematology / Oncology Day Unit, only those in SOPs.
  • Demonstrate awareness of national and local guidelines relating to specialty ( NICE guidelines) and influence care developments in accordance with these.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC.
