CPL UK Healthcare (formally RIG Locums) are currently looking for a General Adult Eating Disorder Consultant, NHS based in South West London area. The role offers highly negotiable rates for a dedicated psychiatrist. The trust seeks an enthusiastic Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to work part-time and it would be excellent for someone wanting to broaden their experience of inpatient psychiatry and develop their clinical skills in a supportive and challenging environment.

The team is well established with good support from senior clinical and managerial colleagues. This is an Adult Eating Disorders Specialist unit, providing care for local and national patients, mostly from Surrey, Sussex and Kent, with eating disorders requiring inpatient treatment. The service accepts patients from age of 18 who cannot be supported effectively in the community. In some cases, patients may require nasogastric feeding, which the team specialise in. This is an 18 beds Unit recently relocated to a new, state of the art building.

Clinical duties of post holder:

  • The appointed consultant will provide overall clinical responsibility for the inpatient assessment, care and treatment of adults on the ward.
  • This post holder will need to be able to support effective team functioning and will also be required to work with a part-time Consultant colleague and the team and directorate in service development initiatives.
  • The aim of this post is to ensure the team delivers a high quality and innovative service, to develop new treatment ideas in keeping with current evidence, to continually evaluate the treatment and to work nationally towards improvement of services for patients with eating disorders.
  • There are max 18 patients on the ward. The postholder will share the clinical responsibilities of these patients with the other part-time consultant and a very experienced SAS doctor, so that the workload is manageable.
  • The max number of patients the consultant will manage at any point in time will depend on the complexity of the patients and their detained/ voluntary status on the ward.

The appointed Consultant will be responsible for:

  • Medical leadership and clinical responsibility for patients in treatment in the service.
  • Maintaining Sec 12 Approval, to use Mental Health Act framework.
  • To be aware of the statutory requirements of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Writing reports for Tribunals.
  • Liaison with referrers and other colleagues (for example medical, liaison and general psychiatry).
  • Providing advice/ support to colleagues on medical wards and liaison psychiatry, for implementation of the MEED guidelines.
  • Working jointly with community eating disorder service colleagues.
  • Working jointly with the respective consultants within Provider Collaborative.
  • Liaison with commissioners when required.
  • Working with the ward manager to prioritize resources and to manage team functioning.
  • Working with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide in depth assessments and appropriate treatment for all patients.
  • Working with the MDT in developing effective and novel treatment approaches.
  • Providing clinical supervision and support to other disciplines where appropriate.
  • Communicating with parents / carers.
  • Ensuring assessment reports, outcome measures, diagnoses are appropriately documented.
  • Supervision of junior medical staff.
  • To maintain clinical records in accordance with the GMC and Trust standards, and to adhere to the GMC Code of Conduct.
