Ridge is growing its Building Safety and Building Regulations capability in response to the Building Safety Act and wider regulatory change. We are looking for a Senior Building Safety Consultant to join our Birmingham-based team, working across complex projects in sectors including residential, commercial, healthcare, education and data centres. This is a senior technical role for someone who enjoys working closely with design teams and embedding Building Regulations compliance into coordinated design.

Role details

  • You will act as a trusted technical adviser, supporting clients and design teams to deliver compliant, defensible solutions without turning compliance into a box‑ticking exercise.
  • The role spans the project lifecycle, with particular emphasis on RIBA Stages 4–6.
  • Typical activities include:
    • Advising on Building Regulations and Building Safety Act duties
    • Supporting delivery of the Building Regulations Principal Designer role
    • Reviewing and constructively challenging design proposals
    • Working with architectural, fire, structural and MEP teams to resolve compliance issues
    • Supporting gateway processes and regulatory submissions

This is an advisory, design‑led role, not Building Control or regulatory approval.

Who this role suits

This role is particularly suited to experienced Architectural Technologists, Design Managers, or technical design leads who are comfortable operating at RIBA Stage 4 onwards, leading technical coordination and managing compliance as part of live project delivery. Many candidates will have developed strong Building Regulations knowledge through hands‑on design experience rather than formal regulatory roles.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong experience in detailed design development and technical coordination
  • Practical knowledge of the Building Regulations
  • An understanding of how the Building Safety Act affects projects
  • Confidence working with design teams and clients
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and apply sound judgement
  • Experience with higher‑risk buildings or BRPD delivery is beneficial but not essential.

Career prospects

This is a senior technical role with real responsibility and influence. There is a clear pathway towards more senior technical or Associate‑level positions for those who want it, while also suiting individuals who prefer to remain focused on technical delivery.

Why Ridge

Ridge offers a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where technical voices are respected and good judgement is valued. You’ll be supported by experienced colleagues, clear governance, and a culture that focuses on getting compliance right without unnecessary risk or over‑prescription.

Your benefits

  • Annual leave: A healthy holiday allowance that starts at 25 days pa, plus the option to buy, carry over or sell.
  • Community spirit: You can take three volunteering days each year to spend time on causes close to your heart.
  • Mental health: Mental Health First Aiders are here to support you, backed up by Unum’s Help@hand app.
  • Financial benefits: A path to peace of mind: life assurance, pension scheme and income protection.
  • Physical wellbeing: Your health is a priority for us too, so we offer medical insurance, private GP access and discounted gym membership.
  • Flexible working: Our flexible approach to hybrid working is there to suit you, your family and your team.
  • Career development: A pathway at Ridge that’s focused on your professional, personal or educational aspirations.
  • Extra benefits: Performance bonus, car allowance and more based on your role - and progression.

We believe that everyone performs their best when they feel like they belong and can be their true selves at work. As an equal opportunities’ employer, we will support you to ensure you have everything you need to be successful and achieve your best in your career at Ridge.
