Fixed Term contract - 7 months (potential for this to be extended)

We make health happen. The Cromwell Hospital Therapy department offers a wide range of specialist services for inpatients and outpatients with dedicated teams providing Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Hand Therapy and Complementary Therapies.

Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical

  • To comply with the local clinical competency framework.
  • To provide clinical assistance to all members of the Therapy team as required.
  • To record any clinical intervention in the patient progress notes.
  • To assist with assessments led by a qualified therapist.
  • To assist with and carry out interventions/treatments/exercises/mobility for individual clients as designed by a qualified therapist.
  • To assist with the care of patients including supervising or assisting with everyday activities like drinking, toileting, dressing and undressing as part of their treatment programme.
  • To monitor patients' physical and cognitive function whilst undertaking a range of activities and report changes and progressions to the therapist.
  • To assist with removal and application of functional/supportive aids (e.g., prostheses and splints).
  • To always maintain patient confidentiality & collect patient records from Medical Records.
  • To collect patients from the ward to attend their therapy sessions and escort them back.

Administration and Patient Coordination

  • To be familiar with all departmental administrative and patient coordination duties and to cover the Therapy Department reception desk during staff absences and busy times, including filing, scanning, collating documents, booking appointments and other administrative tasks as required.
  • To assist the Therapy leadership team with duties including collection of data and key performance indicators.
  • Ensure adequate supply of patient information is available in the department.
  • To assist with maintenance of linen and therapy stock.
  • Collect and handle items as required by therapists (e.g., splints, equipment, medical records).
  • To report all near misses, incidents, concerns, complaints and compliments to the Therapy Manager, Deputy or other senior staff without delay and in accordance with hospital policy.
  • To participate in departmental safety and cleanliness checks (e.g., fire and health & safety).

Key Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience as a Therapy assistant in a hospital setting.
  • Understanding of the impact of disability, illness and other conditions affecting function and issues related to promoting independence.
  • Good understanding of boundaries of own practice and recognise training needs.
  • Understanding of medical records and therapy recordkeeping.
  • Previous experience of providing customer service.
  • Experience in working in a team.
  • Good communication with excellent verbal and written skills, and sound computer skills.
  • Ability to manage own time and take responsibility for routine tasks and be organised.
  • Ability to prioritise between urgent and routine tasks.
  • Able to use initiative and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Physically able to manage demands of rehabilitation.
