West Hill Primary School is a welcoming and inclusive school committed to ensuring every child feels safe, valued and able to achieve their potential. Our Inclusion Base provides specialist support for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs through a nurturing, trauma-informed and relationship-based approach. We are seeking a compassionate, resilient and proactive professional to join our Inclusion Base team. This unique role combines direct support for pupils with family engagement and pastoral support, helping children overcome barriers to learning, develop emotional wellbeing and achieve positive outcomes both in school and at home.
Purpose of the Role:
To work as an integral member of the Inclusion Base team, supporting the teacher in delivering a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment for pupils with SEMH and additional SEND needs. The successful candidate will provide high-quality learning, pastoral and regulation support, enabling pupils to access education, develop independence and make progress academically, socially and emotionally. The post holder will also contribute to a consistent whole‑school approach to inclusion, working collaboratively with mainstream staff to help pupils develop the skills and confidence to participate successfully in the wider school.
You will:
- Support pupils with SEMH and additional SEND needs to access learning and develop emotional regulation, resilience and independence.
- Build strong relationships with children, families and staff.
- Provide targeted pastoral, wellbeing and learning interventions.
- Act as a key link between home and school, supporting positive family engagement.
- Work alongside teachers and external agencies to remove barriers to learning, attendance and inclusion.
- Support successful transitions and reintegration into mainstream learning where appropriate.
- Contribute to a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can thrive.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with children and families, ideally within a school, SEMH or SEND setting.
- Builds positive relationships and communicates effectively with a wide range of people.
- Understands that behaviour is communication and can respond with empathy, consistency and professionalism.
- Is committed to inclusion, safeguarding and improving outcomes for vulnerable children.
- Is organised, resilient and able to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable qualities include:
- A relevant Teaching Assistant or childcare qualification
- Experience working in an SEMH, nurture, specialist provision or therapeutic setting
- Training or experience in trauma-informed or attachment-aware practice
- Training in positive behaviour support, de‑scalation, restorative practice or Team Teach/positive handling
