Mobile Engineering Lead (Native iOS & Android), health scale-up
Central London - one day per week in the office
£110-125k + benefits
In this key hands-on role, the Mobile Engineering Lead will lead a small mobile app development team within a rapidly growing health tech scale-up to maintain the existing native iOS and Android apps as well as building a new app for release in 2026.
A seriously strong and challenging opportunity for a Lead Mobile Application Developer to fast track your career, mixing team and technical leadership to help take the native mobile apps to the next level. The Mobile Engineering Lead is a highly visible, technically hands-on role - primarily prototyping, demonstrating and documenting clear patterns then (critically) making sure they are followed. Once a month the role will need to go deep to help the other developers solve a specific problem.
Responsibilities:
- Leading the mobile engineering team - currently 4 native developers, all cross-skilled on iOS/Android
- Maintaining the existing app on iOS / Android. The codebase is native with very strong source code parity (Swift / Kotlin). This app is close to a feature-freeze now, although some small development is inevitable; over 1000 unit tests (basically identical across platforms)
- Building an entirely new app (release end 2026). This is a major company focus for 2026. With a hugely experienced external design team helping to craft this, it will bring in a conversational interface and AI. This will again be native with strong source code parity, but using clean architecture, MVVM / MVI, SwiftUI / Jetpack, latest libraries etc. Using full-page responsive web views where appropriate (e.g. data collection screens, necessarily connected)
- Taking responsibility for quality and timeliness of all app releases
- Ensuring source code parity across platforms (as far as possible)
- Proactively analysing app quality - including UX, performance, maintainability, test coverage, documentation - and driving initiatives to improve
- Leading technical discussions to the right decisions (democracy of ideas)
- Leading on all aspects of app testing (automated and manual)
Required:
- Degree in computer science, maths or other technical subject, or equivalent significant commercial experience
- Highly skilled in mobile app architecture, with good skills in BOTH native iOS and Android development
- Experience of deploying and monitoring native app releases
- Strong understanding of best practices for development and testing
- Strong understanding of software design patterns, including UI architectural patterns, particularly in regard to native mobile apps
- Excellent experience of team leadership
- Humility and desire to learn from anyone
